Velma’s Story

Velma came into the SNAFU Rescue via a breeder release albeit she was never bred.  Her breeder wanted her to be placed in a loving home and spend the rest of her years being a spoiled pet.

Meet Velma – the loyal, soulful French Bulldog who just wants to feel safe and loved.

Velma is a gentle, laid-back Frenchie who is quietly trying to find her footing in a world that suddenly feels very new. Beneath her sometimes bossy, protective exterior is a sensitive girl who has had her entire life turned upside down. Right now, Velma is guarding her heart while she learns that she’s safe again—but for the right person, the reward will be extraordinary.

Humans are everything to Velma. She finds her greatest comfort in being close to her people and is happiest simply existing beside them. If you’re on the couch, she’s right there. If you wander from room to room, she’ll follow along, content just to be near you. Velma is the ultimate couch companion—quiet, loyal, and always ready to keep you company. She doesn’t need constant stimulation or excitement; what she craves most is consistency, reassurance, and love.

When Velma first meets new people, she can be timid and unsure—but that phase doesn’t last long. Once she feels safe, her sweet side shines through, and she’s more than happy to offer gentle kisses and affection. Trust is the key with Velma, and once it’s earned, she forms deep, meaningful bonds with her humans. She is a true “slow burn” kind of dog, and that makes her connection even more special.

Velma’s favorite pastime is being lazy with her person, but she also enjoys leisurely walks and car rides. She likes to chew on her bones and has a special little pink toy that brings out her goofy side. While she’s still learning how to play and doesn’t engage with toys often, when she does, it’s pure joy—rolling around on the floor, entertaining herself in the cutest way.

Velma would absolutely thrive as the only dog in the home, where she can be the queen of her castle and soak up all the love and attention. That said, she has been slowly learning to coexist with her foster siblings. She does well walking alongside other dogs, wandering the house together, and sharing outdoor space. Where Velma struggles is with resources—she can be possessive of food, toys, and spaces she considers hers. This guarding behavior is only toward other dogs, never humans. She has never bitten, but she has lunged at other dogs to assert control, and because of this, careful management is essential.

If placed in a home with another dog, Velma will need a calm, confident canine companion—one who is not timid or reactive to her bossy moments. Slow, thoughtful introductions and clear boundaries will be critical. Her foster home has successfully managed this by feeding her separately and keeping toys put away until playtime, and Velma has already shown improvement with structure and leadership.

Velma is good with children and did wonderfully during a meet-and-greet with kids. A home with children ages six and up would be a good fit, as she prefers calm interaction—pets, love, and companionship—rather than being chased or carried around.

What Velma truly needs is an experienced, patient, and confident adopter who understands insecure dogs and is willing to lead with kindness, structure, and consistency. She needs someone who won’t rush her, who will let her walls come down on her own timeline, and who can gently guide her through transitions. With the right leadership, Velma continues to improve—and in a forever home, she has the potential to blossom even more.

Velma is fully house-trained and has been an absolute superstar with her potty routine in her foster home. She has had no accidents indoors and does great with a consistent schedule. Velma goes outside every few hours and will also let her humans know when she needs to go out, making her an easy and reliable companion in the home. She thrives on routine and predictability, which helps her feel secure and confident.

Velma is also crate trained. While the crate isn’t her favorite place at first, she does settle in well with a little support. She happily accepts treats when going into her kennel, and having the TV on for background noise helps her feel comforted and less alone. Velma is crated during the day while her foster family is at work and at night for bedtime. When she first arrived, she was also kenneled during dinner time, but she adjusted quickly and no longer needs that extra structure.

Like many clever Frenchies, Velma once tested her limits and managed a brief “Houdini” escape from her kennel during the day. Since switching to a sturdier crate, she has done great and understands the routine. At night, she may make a few silly noises when first settling in, but she typically calms herself and sleeps without issue.

Outside of the crate, Velma is a calm, affectionate, and easygoing girl who simply wants to be near her people. She does best with a steady routine, clear expectations, and gentle reassurance. With continued structure and patience, Velma will remain the well-mannered, reliable companion she has proven herself to be—one who brings quiet comfort, loyalty, and love to her forever home.

Medically, Velma seems to be in great health.  She has been spayed, updated on vaccinations/dewormings, microchipped, and has been given the okay for adoption by our veterinarian!  Velma does suffer from those pesky seasonal allergies.  Regular wiping, baths and OTC allergy meds are a must to keep her comfortable and her allergies at bay.  Velma has low-grade bilateral luxating patellas in her rear legs. This is a common condition in small breeds, including French Bulldogs, and at her current low grade, it is not causing her pain or limiting her daily activities. She walks, lounges, and enjoys her normal routine without issue. To help support her joints long-term, Velma should be maintained on a good-quality joint supplement as part of her daily routine. At this time, no special treatment or surgery is indicated—just awareness, proactive care, and routine monitoring. With proper management, Velma is expected to continue enjoying her cozy lifestyle, walks, and daily adventures right alongside her people.

Velma is the classic Frenchie in all the soft, soulful ways—affectionate, loyal, a little bossy when she feels unsure, and deeply devoted to her people. She isn’t a high-energy, always-on-the-go dog, but she does best in a home that offers routine, companionship, and gentle structure. Velma would do well in just about any type of home. While a securely fenced backyard would be a wonderful bonus—giving her a safe space to wander, sniff, and relax—it is not a requirement as long as her family is committed to regular walks and outdoor time, which she truly enjoys.

Velma loves spending time in the fenced yard at her foster home, happily wandering around and hanging out with her foster brothers. That said, she would be perfectly content in a home without a yard if she gets daily walks and quality time outside. Safety is important for Velma, so a fenced yard is always recommended when possible, but her happiness ultimately comes from being with her humans—not from how much space she has.

Velma would thrive in a low-key, calm household. She would do beautifully with a single adult, a couple, or a family with respectful children ages six and up. She is not a fan of chaos or being chased or carried, but she absolutely loves gentle affection, pets, hugs, and quiet companionship. Velma would especially adore a home where someone is around during the day—she would happily soak up kisses, lounge on the couch, and be your constant shadow. That said, she can also do well with someone who works outside the home, as long as she gets regular breaks out of her kennel to stretch her legs and decompress.

Velma navigates home life well and adapts nicely to her environment when she feels secure. She would also be a great candidate for a calm, low-key workplace where she could accompany her human and quietly keep them company. Whether it’s tagging along to work, joining you for a walk, or curling up beside you on the couch, Velma just wants to be included.
