Popeye‘s Story

Popeye is a handsome, sweet, silly, stubborn English bulldog who loves to be loved! Popeye is a 100% textbook bulldog. Popeye has a ton of love and joy to give his forever family. He loves to beg for pets and chest rubs!

Popeye’s favorite activities are: napping on the couch, sunning his bulldogs buns on the deck, catching some z’s, begging for treats, napping in a plush dog bed, going for car rides, taking a walk, getting snacks and did we mention: snoozing? He is truly a couch potato! This beefy boy loves to live the life of luxury and would do well in an experienced bulldog home that is quiet and slow paced!

Popeye is learning the ways of pet life and has made such great improvements in a short amount of time. We think Popeye would enjoy a quiet family with older kids or with no kids. Popeye is very stubborn and has a big personality. He makes it well known when he is NOT in the mood to do something! When commanded to do something Popeye is not interested in, he will give you attitude and has made attempts to bite/nip at his foster family; however he has not broken skin but shows his immediate displeasure. He gives his people warnings when he is not a fan of their behavior. For this reason, we think he would thrive best in a home with older children who can detect the warning signs of his disapproval. He will not be placed in a home with young children or a home with frequent young visitors. Popeye will need a firm leader, consistent correction when is unwanted behavior is present and persistence to curb this bad habit. 

Popeye has done well with every dog he has met while in foster care. However, Popeye is slowly learning where he fits in a pack. Popeye has gotten along very well in his foster home with his easy going, submissive French bulldog foster sister and more dominant English bulldog sis. We feel Popeye would thrive in a home where he is the only dog or do equally as well with calm, easy going, well-balanced or submissive fur siblings. Popeye does get along with other dogs, but slow introductions will be an absolute must for him. 

Popeye has not been around cats, but given his loaf-like disposition, we think he would do fine with them. Popeye has shown some resource guarding with food and human attention. He is corrected when this behavior occurs, but potential adopters must be willing again to exercise firm, consistent leadership to address this behavior and help him acclimate to life as a pet. Again, slow intros will be absolutely required to help Popeye integrate into his forever family!

Popeye has done incredibly well with potty training. His foster family reports he is about 95% potty trained. Popeye has quickly picked up on going outside to potty. He has occasionally had an accident if left unsupervised for too long. True to his bulldog nature, Popeye does not enjoy going outside when it is not his idea. However, he is incredibly treated, motivated and responds well to going potty when he is rewarded. As with all of our dogs, any adopter will need to be able to and willing to continue working on potty training with him, offering him a consistent schedule and working with him on a signal for potty. Popeye is not a fan of being crated. He has done well when gated in an area like the kitchen, but he has earned free roaming privileges at his foster family’s home. As long as Popeye is given plenty of potty breaks, he has done well with being left uncrated. Popeye is a boy who loves creature comforts and will be happiest if able to share a bed with his beloved humans at nighttime! 

Popeye puts the HUNK in CHUNK! Medically, Popeye is in good health, but he will require a family that is willing to work with him on maintaining a healthy weight. Popeye had both a TPLO and FHO procedure to fix diseased joints in his knees and hips. It is imperative for Popeye’s health, particularly his joints, that he be at an appropriate weight and avoid indulgent snacking or table scraps. Popeye will benefit from a life-long daily quality joint supplement and has some pesky bulldog allergies treated well with a daily Zyrtec. Popeye also had his eyelid repaired and has eye drops to keep his eyes well lubricated. Popeye has been neutered, updated on vaccinations/deworming, is microchipped and been given a clean bill of health for adoption by our veterinarian. Popeye seems to have some seasonal allergies and a cytopoint injection may serve him well during those high allergy months. 

Because Popeye is truly a couch potato, we feel he would do best in a home with minimal steps and with a fenced in backyard, but it is not required. We think Popeye would be happiest with an experienced bulldog family who loves to spend time at home. Popeye is leash trained and loves to go for short walks! Popeye loves to spend time outside and we think he’d be a good camping buddy if the camping trip is slow paced. We think he’d love to go to work with his new family as Popeye enjoys a car ride (like never wanting to leave the car!) and being the center of human attention! He is great at spending his day sawing logs in the corner of your office. If Popeye cannot join you at work, Popeye is content staying home to keep an eye on things as long as he has a soft cozy bed and Nylabone toy to keep him occupied.
