Mabel’s Story

Mabel came into the SNAFU Rescue via a breeder contact. Although Mabel was not a breeder release, the breeder who took her in wanted her to be placed in a loving home and spend the rest of her years being a spoiled pet.

Mabel came into her foster home shy and reserved, but once she felt comfortable, her true personality began to shine. She’s a vibrant, energetic French Bulldog with boundless energy. Mabel is always on the move and loves to be active. Her thick, velvety coat and large, expressive ears give her a striking appearance, but it’s her playful, spunky personality that will capture your heart. She knows her name and a few basic commands, though like most Frenchies, she has a strong-willed, independent streak. She definitely thinks she’s the boss, which adds to her charm!

Mabel’s favorite activity is chewing on toys, especially Benebones or anything sturdy enough to withstand her powerful jaws. She can entertain herself for hours with a good chew toy, making it easy to keep her busy. Despite her love for play, Mabel has some quirks—while she will tolerate a bath (though begrudgingly), attempting a nail trim is a whole different story. Her sharp nails earn her the nickname “part velociraptor” because she’s not fond of getting them trimmed!

She walks well on a leash but, if given the chance, Mabel would prefer to run free. She loves exploring and enjoys her independence during outdoor time. Mabel is also the ultimate co-pilot during car rides, always calm and content while she rides shotgun. She does well in the car and will happily accompany you wherever you go, gazing out the window to take in the sights.

When it comes to other dogs, Mabel can be selective. She has lived with both larger and smaller dogs, male and female, and has done well with easygoing, submissive dogs who respect her space. However, she does tend to resource guard her toys, especially when another dog gets too close or tries to take them. Mabel doesn’t resource guard from people, only from other dogs, and she particularly guards newer toys. Because of this, she is fed separately from other dogs to avoid any conflicts over food or toys. While she enjoys playing with certain dogs, Mabel is often choosy (albeit with time she is much more accommodating) and tends to prefer the company of humans over her canine pals. She would do well with a balanced, passive dog but would also be perfectly happy as the only pet in the home.

Mabel has a strong, high-energy play style, which means she needs a home with older, dog-savvy children who understand her boundaries. While she currently lives with a toddler in her foster home, she is closely supervised to ensure everyone’s safety. Mabel can get nippy when she’s excited and playing, so her new home must provide her with the space and respect she needs to thrive. For this reason, a home with children 10 years or older would be the best fit for her.

Although she resource guards from other dogs, Mabel doesn’t guard items from people, but it’s important to manage her interactions with other animals carefully. Slow introductions and supervision are key to ensuring everyone gets along. Mabel’s ideal home will offer firm, consistent leadership and the patience to work with her as she continues to learn boundaries and manners. A family experienced in dog behavior would be a huge plus, especially to help with her resource guarding and energy management. Slow introductions and supervision around children and other animals are a must to be sure they and she are kept safe.

Mabel’s foster family happily reports she is nearly potty trained.  She has been accident-free for quite some time!  She’s had a bad habit of liking to pee on soft items (blankets, dog beds, etc) so those items are recommended to be slowly introduced once she is settled into her adoptive home.  A regular and consistent schedule will help with her continued potty training success in her new home.  Mabel is crate-trained and does extremely well in her crate; and keeps it clean and dry!  She prefers not to be crated for long periods and would rather hang out with her people and randomly grumble with displeasure when she wants to be with her people. For her safety, we recommend that she is kept in a similar crating or dog-safe/proof area when her family is away at work or leaves the home. She does not know danger and is still learning what is expected of her inside the home. Mabel loves her humans so much that we believe she would like to show off her snuggling abilities and share her human’s bed in her adoptive home once she is settled and comfortable.

Medically, Mabel seems to be in great health!  She has been spayed, updated on vaccinations/dewormings, heartworm tested, microchipped, and had a bilateral patella surgery to correct her grade 3 luxating patellas. She has been given a clean bill of health by our veterinarian! She does suffer from those pesky Frenchie allergies which can be easily managed with a daily allergy pill in addition to a cytopoint during high allergy season. Mabel will also benefit from not only a healthy weight but also a daily high-quality joint supplement to maintain her joint health.

Mabel would be happiest in a house with a fully fenced-in yard (as opposed to a multiple-floor apartment-style dwelling with no yard).  She adores the outdoors and loves to explore, sun her buns, and gallop around in the grass!  Mabel prefers to run free around her yard as that gives her great joy.  She does okay with stairs but given her short squatty legs, Mabel requests a smaller amount of stairs in her adoptive home. We also think she’d love to go work with her new family if they wanted to take her with them to the office. Mabel must understand her boundaries and accept any limitations of the space offered to her in the workplace. She would cozy up in the office with a comfy bed and her beloved benebone. If her people are not able to take her to work with them, no problem – she’s completely happy sleeping part of the day away in her comfy bed as long as her people can arrange a mid-day potty break for her!  If she was offered a part-time or full-time stay-at-home family member; that would be ideal for her!   Again, she is a fun, energetic, adorably sweet, very playful yet chill Frenchie who wants to be part of her human’s everyday activities.  She loves to play, run around outdoors, take walks, go on car rides, and explore and investigate what her people might be doing at all times.  Mabel is learning that cuddling is her jam! She takes great pleasure in seeking attention and adoration from her loved ones and would love to explore by day and cuddle on the couch by night with her adoptive family.  Mabel is incredibly loyal and bonds deeply with her humans and is seeking stability. She’s a sweet, playful, and loving dog who will thrive in a home that can give her the attention and understanding she deserves; she will repay the attention by offering sweet gentle kisses. With her stunning looks, big personality, and endless love to give, Mabel will make a wonderful companion for the right family.

If you feel like your family might be the perfect forever home for Mabel, please submit an adoption application for her today!!

disclaimer

Please note that it will likely be at *least* a 3–4 week minimum before you hear back from us after submitting an adoption application.

We typically accept for new applications for a period of 7 days or until 20 applications have been received for any newly available dog. After that time period, the applications are sent on to the foster family for review and that usually takes from at *least* a few days to a week to sort through the applications, etc. Most of our dogs receive several applications so this process does take some time, especially on dogs who are more popular for one reason or another.

We do require phone interviews to be conducted between the foster family and potential adopters, vet reference checks and a home visit to be conducted for all potential adopters, if they are selected as the top choice applicant, which will also take time to complete. That being said, we do always let our applicants know if they are chosen or not.

IF you happen to not be chosen, please don’t feel discouraged as, again, we usually get several applications for each dog, and sometimes it can be very difficult to choose just one adopter. In those cases, we usually offer to keep the applications for adoption on file for any future dogs that come into our rescue.

ALL adopters are required to come and pick up their adopted dogs in person from the dog’s foster home (we do not ship any of our dogs). Please have road/driving transport plans in place to pick up an adopted dog before you apply! While we are not against adopters flying a foster dog in cabin on a commercial flight, please keep in mind that many are not good candidates for flying due to size and/or being a brachycephalic/short nosed breed.

If an adopter cannot keep one of our grads, for any reason at all, at ANY point in time, they *must* be willing and able to return their adopted dog to his/her original foster home, despite distance and any costs that would be required to do so.
