Emerald’s Story
Emerald came into the SNAFU Rescue via a breeder release. Her breeder wanted her to be placed in a loving home and spend the rest of her years being a spoiled pet.
Emerald, affectionately known as Emmy, is a whirlwind of joy, energy, and boundless curiosity. This vibrant and affectionate French Bulldog puppy is truly a little dynamo, embracing life with enthusiasm and a touch of delightful clumsiness. She is endlessly fascinated by the world around her, greeting every new experience with wide-eyed wonder and an eager spirit. Whether she’s chasing after her favorite toy of the day, zooming around the yard at full speed, or flopping down for belly rubs, Emmy is always ready for her next adventure.
Social and outgoing, Emmy is a people-lover through and through. She adores meeting new friends—both human and canine—and revels in the attention of anyone willing to give her pets and affection. Though she can be a bit of a social butterfly, she does have a special fondness for all humans big or small! She thrives on companionship and is happiest when she’s surrounded by those who love her.
When it comes to playtime, Emmy is always ready to go! She’s a bundle of energy who delights in a good game of chase, a rowdy wrestling match with a canine companion, or an enthusiastic tug-of-war session. She particularly enjoys running zoomies around the yard, her little legs moving at lightning speed as she dashes back and forth with pure, unfiltered joy. Her toy preferences change by the day, but she consistently gravitates toward her beloved stuffed squeaky spider, which she proudly carries around like a prized possession. She also has a soft spot for her yak cheese chews, which keep her busy and satisfy her strong urge to chew.
As much as she loves playtime, Emmy is still a puppy and is learning what is and isn’t appropriate to chew. She has a habit of investigating the world with her mouth, which means she’ll need plenty of durable chew toys to keep her occupied and out of trouble. Nylabones, yak chews, and sturdy stuffed toys are some of her favorites, and she can often be redirected to these when she’s feeling particularly mischievous.
Emmy gets along well with other dogs, especially those who match her energy and play style. She has primarily been around other female dogs, but with proper introductions, she would likely get along with any friendly and playful pup. A high-energy canine sibling who loves to wrestle and chase would be an ideal companion for her. Since she is still working on her doggy manners, she would do best with tolerant dogs who don’t mind her exuberance and occasional personal space invasions.
She absolutely adores children, but because she is still in the teething and mouthing phase, she would do best with dog-savvy kids who understand puppy behavior. Her playful nibbles are never meant to hurt, but her sharp little puppy teeth can be a bit much for very young children. Supervision and gentle redirection will be key as she continues to learn appropriate play behaviors.
One thing to know about Emmy is that she is not an independent pup. She craves companionship and does not enjoy being alone. Because of this, she would thrive in a home where someone is around most of the time or where she has a canine friend to keep her company. Her adopters should be prepared to help her work through her separation anxiety with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement.
As with all puppies, Emerald will need a family dedicated to her training and development. She is still learning leash manners and how to navigate the world with confidence. Thankfully, she is not a puller, but she does get easily distracted by all the exciting sights and smells around her. She will benefit from continued training to help her become a well-mannered companion. Routine, structure, and positive reinforcement will be key to her growth and success.
As with all of our dogs, we recommend slow introductions between Emerald and other pets, as well as supervision around children, to ensure a smooth transition for everyone. With the right home, patience, and love, Emerald will blossom into the amazing companion she is meant to be!
Emerald’s house training is still a work in progress, but she is making steady improvements with consistency. She has a good understanding of potty pads and does well when given regular opportunities to go outside. However, she still has occasional accidents, especially on the carpet, if she isn’t taken out frequently enough. Weather has also played a role in her progress, as she is sometimes hesitant to go outside in less-than-ideal conditions.
When it comes to crate training, Emerald is doing reasonably well. She sleeps in her crate at night and also stays in it when her foster family is out of the house. While it’s not her favorite place to be, she tolerates it and understands that it’s part of her routine. However, she is still prone to accidents in the crate, particularly during the day. Despite being let out at lunchtime for a potty break, she often has pooped in her crate by the time her foster family returns home. With time, patience, and a consistent schedule, this is expected to improve. Providing her with plenty of exercise and potty breaks throughout the day will help reinforce good habits and set her up for success.
Medically, Emerald is in good health outside of his grade 4-5/6 heart murmur. She had an echocardiogram (ultrasound) done on her heart (results will be provided to the adopter). Emerald has been diagnosed with Valvular Pulmonic Stenosis, which is a malformation of the Pulmonic valve leading to obstruction to the flow of blood from the heart into the lungs. Emerald is on a daily heart medication/beta-blocker (atenolol) that will need to be adjusted as she grows. She shows no symptoms (fatigue, fainting, etc.) that indicate he has any issues with her heart. She will need to be monitored for any signs of heart disease or congestive heart failure as she ages (fatigue, weakness, lethargy, shortness of breath, fainting, etc.) Emerald will need a follow-up echocardiogram at about 1-1.5 years of age to reevaluate and determine if any intervention is required ( additional medication etc). Emerald is a happy dog (showing no outward signs of a murmur) but her heart absolutely *must* continue to be monitored by both a veterinarian *AND* a veterinary cardiologist for life. The cost of one echocardiogram ranges from approximately $500 at K-State to approximately $550 in the Omaha, Nebraska area. Please research cardiologists in your area to check on prices for future echocardiograms for her in the future as they will absolutely be required for Emerald and can be more or less costly depending on the area in which you live. Potential adopters will need to have a veterinary cardiologist within reasonable driving distance to be approved to adopt her (3-4 hours max driving time). Since her lifespan could possibly be shorter than a “regular” dog, we want her to have the best life she could have, but that goes for all our foster dogs, of course! We will be VERY strict with “vetting” any potential adopters for Emerald, as we want to make sure she is very loved and has the best life and care (both in-home care and vet care) that she possibly can during his lifetime although our cardiologist doesn’t think her lifespan will be affected.
Please see this link for more information on Valvular Pulmonic Stenosis: https://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/cardiovascular/c_dg_pulmonic_stenosis
She has been spayed, microchipped, heartworm tested, updated on vaccinations/dewormings, and has been given a clean bill of health by our veterinarian!
Emerald would thrive in a home with a securely fenced yard where she can unleash her boundless energy and indulge in her favorite activity—zoomies! She absolutely loves running full speed and needs a safe space to do so. While she does well on a leash, she is still learning reliable recall, so a fenced yard would give her the freedom to explore safely. Since she is still mastering stairs, a home with few or no stairs would be ideal, though she is making progress.
Emerald is quite the vocal pup and has a lot to say about the world around her. She barks at new sounds, unfamiliar sights, and sometimes just for fun, making apartment or shared-wall living less than ideal. A quiet home with patient owners who can work on her confidence and barking habits would be best. Because she is still working on potty training, easy access to the outdoors will be crucial in setting her up for success.
This affectionate little girl would do best with a family that is home most of the time—she thrives on companionship and adores being doted on. She would flourish in a home with devoted empty nesters or a work-from-home household where she can receive extra pets and cuddles throughout the day. Over time, as she matures, she may do well in an office setting, but for now, her vocal nature and high energy would likely be disruptive.
Emerald is still figuring out the world, and with patience, training, and love, she will grow into an incredible companion. She is a sweetheart who deserves a family that will provide her with structure, affection, and the best possible life. Expect puppy hugs, enthusiastic chin nuzzles, and endless requests for belly rubs and ear scratches. With the right environment, she will blossom into a well-mannered and loving member of the family!
Emerald is a special girl with a heart full of love and an exuberant zest for life. She is looking for a patient, loving family who will embrace her playful spirit and help guide her as she grows into an amazing adult dog. With the right home, she will blossom into the perfect companion—a joyful, affectionate, and endlessly entertaining addition to any family. If you’re looking for a puppy who will bring laughter, adventure, and unconditional love into your life, Emerald is the one for you!
If you feel like your family might be the perfect forever home for Emerald, please submit an adoption application for her today!!
disclaimer
Please note that it will likely be at *least* a 3–4 week minimum before you hear back from us after submitting an adoption application.
We typically accept for new applications for a period of 7 days or until 20 applications have been received for any newly available dog. After that time period, the applications are sent on to the foster family for review and that usually takes from at *least* a few days to a week to sort through the applications, etc. Most of our dogs receive several applications so this process does take some time, especially on dogs who are more popular for one reason or another.
We do require phone interviews to be conducted between the foster family and potential adopters, vet reference checks and a home visit to be conducted for all potential adopters, if they are selected as the top choice applicant, which will also take time to complete. That being said, we do always let our applicants know if they are chosen or not.
IF you happen to not be chosen, please don’t feel discouraged as, again, we usually get several applications for each dog, and sometimes it can be very difficult to choose just one adopter. In those cases, we usually offer to keep the applications for adoption on file for any future dogs that come into our rescue.
ALL adopters are required to come and pick up their adopted dogs in person from the dog’s foster home (we do not ship any of our dogs). Please have road/driving transport plans in place to pick up an adopted dog before you apply! While we are not against adopters flying a foster dog in cabin on a commercial flight, please keep in mind that many are not good candidates for flying due to size and/or being a brachycephalic/short nosed breed.
If an adopter cannot keep one of our grads, for any reason at all, at ANY point in time, they *must* be willing and able to return their adopted dog to his/her original foster home, despite distance and any costs that would be required to do so.
