Drako’s Story

Drako came into the SNAFU Rescue via a shelter release. The shelter wanted him to be placed in a breed specific rescure to help find him a loving home and spend the rest of his years being a spoiled pet.

Drako is the ultimate combination of playful powerhouse and professional couch potato! This handsome Bulldog mix has two very distinct speeds: FULL SPEED AHEAD and “please come sit down so I can cuddle you.” When his people first come home, Drako is beside himself with excitement, racing around the house with the most enthusiastic zoomies before quickly deciding that he has much more important things to do—namely, getting as close to his people as physically possible. For Drako, the very best place in the world is right beside his person on the couch, soaking up pets and enjoying some quality cuddle time.

Drako absolutely loves to play and is always ready for a good romp. He adores his soft chew toys and rubber bones, which are especially important favorites given his history of some pretty rough teeth. He also loves a good game of fetch and will happily run around the backyard chasing toys, but he gets just as much enjoyment out of patrolling the perimeter and making sure no suspicious invaders have entered his domain. He takes his backyard security job very seriously! After he has completed his patrol and burned off some energy, though, he is more than happy to come inside and become a couch potato again.

With people, Drako is an absolute sweetheart. He is friendly, affectionate, and very gentle, and despite his size and enthusiasm, he has been remarkably soft-mouthed throughout his time in foster care. Even when he gets excited during play, he doesn’t tend to bite down. He loves being with his people and genuinely just wants to be included in whatever is happening. He knows several basic commands, including sit, stay, come, move, and “gentle” when taking food from a hand, and he has been wonderfully obedient with them. He’s a smart boy who seems to enjoy having some direction and structure.

Drako’s relationship with other dogs is a little more complicated—but very manageable. He can be somewhat dominant when first meeting canine friends and tends to be a bit of a bulldozer, literally pushing his way through other dogs until he figures out the social hierarchy and learns his place. He can also be pushy with smaller dogs initially, but once he has acclimated, he has demonstrated that he can coexist with them perfectly well. He would be happy as an only dog and would also do well with another dog with appropriate introductions and time to settle in. His foster family has seen him successfully learn to share his space with other dogs, but he will need humans who understand that his initial “I’m in charge!” attitude is part of his personality and are willing to give everyone time to adjust.

Toys can bring out Drako’s competitive Bulldog side, particularly when multiple dogs are involved. If two or more dogs go after the same toy, he is perfectly willing to bulldoze straight through the crowd to claim it! And if he finds a toy he particularly loves, he may decide that the safest place for it is hidden away in his kennel. He hasn’t shown significant resource guarding otherwise, but his humans should be thoughtful about toy management, especially in a multi-dog home, and supervise high-value items until everyone is comfortable.

Cats and small animals are a definite no for Drako. He has a strong prey drive and will go after things he sees moving that he doesn’t recognize as part of his social circle. A cat-free home is important, as is care around other small animals. He is a big, strong boy with very little spatial awareness, too, so while he is exceptionally gentle by nature, he can be unintentionally overwhelming. For that reason, we would not recommend a home with very small children who could easily be knocked over by his enthusiastic body-slamming-style affection. Older, dog-savvy children who understand how to interact appropriately with a large, energetic dog could potentially be a good fit with proper supervision.

Drako is a pretty easygoing guy overall and, compared with many Bulldogs, has been remarkably healthy. He has the kind of personality that could make him a wonderful first Bulldog or first-time rescue for someone who is prepared to continue working on his manners and give him clear, consistent boundaries. He doesn’t need a perfectly experienced Bulldog home—he needs people who appreciate his goofy confidence, understand that he can be a little pushy with dogs at first, and are willing to let him settle in and learn the rules.

At the end of the day, though, Drako is really just a big softie who wants to be loved. He may patrol the yard like he’s protecting the entire neighborhood, race around the house like a tornado when you walk through the door, and confidently bulldoze his way through the canine crowd when a toy is involved—but give him a spot on the couch next to his favorite person, and suddenly all that tough-guy Bulldog business disappears. Drako is happiest when he is right beside his people, being petted and soaking up their love. If you’re looking for a fun-loving, affectionate, goofy Bulldog mix who can keep up with an active lifestyle but is equally committed to spending the evening curled up beside you, Drako may be your guy!

Drako is housebroken and does exceptionally well when kept on a consistent schedule, though he may occasionally mark in a new environment—a behavior his neuter should help curb. He goes outside several times a day and enjoys taking his time wandering and patrolling the yard before he decides he’s ready to come back inside. He is also crate trained and actually loves his kennel, often choosing to go in on his own in the evening when he’s tired and ready to settle down. In his foster home, Drako is crated only at night and whenever no one is home, and he settles nicely when his people are away. If he knows his people are home and can hear them moving around, though, he’ll happily whine to let them know he would much rather be out with everyone! He is also very easygoing around mealtimes—he eats peacefully alongside the other dogs and will patiently sit and wait while his people eat, hoping he might be lucky enough to get a little bite. Overall, Drako thrives with routine and consistency, and when he knows what to expect, he does wonderfully.

Medically, Drako seems to be in good health!  He has been neutered, had a dental, nares widened, palates shortened, updated on vaccinations/dewormings, microchipped, and has been given a clean bill of health by our veterinarian! Drako requires a daily OTC allergy pill to keep those pesky seasonal allergies at bay!

Drako would thrive in a home that embraces his playful, goofy spirit while giving him plenty of human companionship. A securely fenced yard is a must for this boy—not only because he loves running, playing, and patrolling his yard, but because Drako has a tendency to run toward anything or anyone unfamiliar that catches his attention. He can look pretty intimidating barreling across the yard barking to greet a new person, so a securely fenced space is essential to keeping him safe and preventing his enthusiastic greeting skills from getting him into trouble!

More than anything, Drako wants to be where his people are. He absolutely thrives on human interaction and forms strong bonds with his family, making a home where someone is around much of the day an ideal fit. Whether he’s following his people around, playing in the yard, or stretched out beside them on the couch, Drako is happiest when he is included in everyday life. He is a true dreamboat—cuddly, incredibly sweet, and completely devoted to his people.

Drako does fine with stairs and, although he has only had limited experience with them, he has navigated the stairs he has encountered without issue. His forever family should continue to encourage him as he becomes more familiar and confident with them. He would do well as either an only dog or with another dog after proper introductions and acclimation, though his dominant, sometimes pushy personality means a canine companion should be chosen thoughtfully. A home without cats or small animals is required due to his strong prey drive.

Drako is looking for a family who will let him be their big, goofy shadow and give him the companionship he craves. He doesn’t need a fancy lifestyle or constant entertainment—just a safe, secure home, a fenced yard to patrol, some toys to chase, and, most importantly, people who will let him be right beside them. In return, they’ll get a loyal, affectionate, hilarious Bulldog mix who will happily trade his backyard security duties for a spot on the couch and a never-ending supply of belly rubs. Drako is ready to be someone’s very best friend—and he would really, really like to be your permanent shadow.

If you feel like your family might be the perfect forever home for Drako, please submit an adoption application for him today!!

disclaimer

Please note that it will likely be at *least* a 3–4 week minimum before you hear back from us after submitting an adoption application.

We typically accept for new applications for a period of 7 days or until 20 applications have been received for any newly available dog. After that time period, the applications are sent on to the foster family for review and that usually takes from at *least* a few days to a week to sort through the applications, etc. Most of our dogs receive several applications so this process does take some time, especially on dogs who are more popular for one reason or another.

We do require phone interviews to be conducted between the foster family and potential adopters, vet reference checks and a home visit to be conducted for all potential adopters, if they are selected as the top choice applicant, which will also take time to complete. That being said, we do always let our applicants know if they are chosen or not.

IF you happen to not be chosen, please don’t feel discouraged as, again, we usually get several applications for each dog, and sometimes it can be very difficult to choose just one adopter. In those cases, we usually offer to keep the applications for adoption on file for any future dogs that come into our rescue.

ALL adopters are required to come and pick up their adopted dogs in person from the dog’s foster home (we do not ship any of our dogs). Please have road/driving transport plans in place to pick up an adopted dog before you apply! While we are not against adopters flying a foster dog in cabin on a commercial flight, please keep in mind that many are not good candidates for flying due to size and/or being a brachycephalic/short nosed breed.

If an adopter cannot keep one of our grads, for any reason at all, at ANY point in time, they *must* be willing and able to return their adopted dog to his/her original foster home, despite distance and any costs that would be required to do so.
