Captain’s Story

Captain found his way into SNAFU via a breeder release. His breeder wanted him to be placed in a loving pet home to be spoiled, loved, and live out his life as a cherished pet!

Captain is the definition of adaptive! His energy level matches the atmosphere around him.  If his humans are up for a walk or playing a game, so is Captain!  If it’s time for watching TV and snuggling on the couch, well, he is right there too.  Captain loves a good run around the house with his toys or when the Midwest weather cooperates, he will take to the backyard to chase away the bunnies.  He has immediately taken to toys but thinks his job is to destroy them.  Captain insists on attacking his toys to rip all the plush stuffing out to get to that pesky squeaker.  He is much safer around durable, chew-resistant toys that he cannot destroy.  Captain has been known to end up with items in his mouth he shouldn’t.  He will search for rocks, sticks, or anything he can get his little paws on.  He must always be supervised while in the yard and firmly redirected when attempting to put something in his mouth that isn’t appropriate.  Captain is experiencing a big change and he requires a human leader to help guide him into what is expected of him in his adoptive home and to help him learn proper dog behaviors. Overall, Captain is a little snuggle bug that ALWAYS has to be around his human.  He is an equal opportunity lap napper as anyone’s lap will do when it is time to tune into his favorite shows!  There hasn’t been a human (big or small) that he hasn’t fallen head over paws for.  He really is a sweet boy!  The cutie has a host of nicknames that he is affectionately called in his foster home but Might Captain is his favorite!  Captain does not have other furry beings in his foster home however he has no problems whatsoever integrating into a pack when he is on a play date.  He plays nicely with all dogs big or small and of any gender.  The only thing this happy-go-lucky boy loves more than snack time are the humans in the home.  Captain LOVES his people, adores his people, and worships his people! He relishes his time to sit with them, snuggle with them and ride in the car to run errands with them.  He truly just wants to be with his people all the time as he finds comfort in their presence.  Because of his overall kind disposition,  his unintended mouthing when he gets excited, and when trying to remove unwanted items from his mouth, we feel Captain will do perfectly well with other balanced dogs and with do-savvy, gentle, respectful school-aged children or older.  We also feel Captain would thrive in a multi-dog household as he can learn the ropes, what is expected in the home, and proper dog manners.  Slow introductions to other dogs and children in the household are a must and she should always be supervised to make sure both he and they are kept safe.

Captain is still working on potty training and is doing extremely well!   As with all of our dogs, any adopter will need to be patient and willing to continue working on potty training as he acclimates to his new home and surroundings. Captain requires a consistent outside routine and a signal for potty.   He is 100% crate trained and sleeps calmly and accident-free in his kennel (bribed with a healthy snack of course).  The door of his safe space is always available to Captain and he often runs in and out with toys and takes short snoozes.  Since Captain is such a snuggle bug, we know he would love to share a human bed in the evening and would offer many cuddles with his new family.

Medically, Captain is in great health!  He has been neutered, nares widened, palate shortened, tonsils removed, microchipped, heartworm tested, updated on vaccinations/dewormings, and has been given a clean bill of health by our veterinarian!

Captain would do great in any type of home since but since he fancies exploring the outdoors, chasing rabbits, is still learning what can be a danger to him, and still working on potty training a house with a completely closed fenced yard will be preferred for him (as opposed to a multiple-floor apartment-style dwelling).  Captain seems to have a bit of a prey drive and keeping him safe in a completely fenced yard is best for his ongoing safety.  Captain is short and squatty and has not been able to master stairs quite yet.  He can do a few here and there but larger staircases are not his jam so a house with little to no stairs would be best for him.  Since Captain really enjoys being around his people as much as possible, we think he would love to eventually go to work with his new family if they wanted to take him with them to the office (once he is fully potty trained and his unintended nipping is resolved).  He would much rather have a part-time or full-time stay-at-home or work-from-home family member as he finds comfort in the presence of his beloved humas.  Otherwise he’s completely happy sleeping just part of the day away as long as he has a comfy crate mat, a furry friend (would be a plus) to keep him company and his people can arrange for a mid-day potty break for him!   This chunka, chunka, love is looking for some lovin’ and major attention!  Captain thinks he needs to be the center of the universe 24/7.  Mighty Captain needs time, consistent redirection from a great leader, lots of pets, snuggles, lap time, couch time, and most importantly love!

If you feel like your family might be the perfect forever home for Captain, please submit an adoption application for him.

disclaimer

Please note that it will likely be at *least* a 3–4 week minimum before you hear back from us after submitting an adoption application.

We typically accept for new applications for a period of 7 days or until 20 applications have been received for any newly available dog. After that time period, the applications are sent on to the foster family for review and that usually takes from at *least* a few days to a week to sort through the applications, etc. Most of our dogs receive several applications so this process does take some time, especially on dogs who are more popular for one reason or another.

We do require phone interviews to be conducted between the foster family and potential adopters, vet reference checks and a home visit to be conducted for all potential adopters, if they are selected as the top choice applicant, which will also take time to complete. That being said, we do always let our applicants know if they are chosen or not.

IF you happen to not be chosen, please don’t feel discouraged as, again, we usually get several applications for each dog, and sometimes it can be very difficult to choose just one adopter. In those cases, we usually offer to keep the applications for adoption on file for any future dogs that come into our rescue.

ALL adopters are required to come and pick up their adopted dogs in person from the dog’s foster home (we do not ship any of our dogs). Please have road/driving transport plans in place to pick up an adopted dog before you apply! While we are not against adopters flying a foster dog in cabin on a commercial flight, please keep in mind that many are not good candidates for flying due to size and/or being a brachycephalic/short nosed breed.

If an adopter cannot keep one of our grads, for any reason at all, at ANY point in time, they *must* be willing and able to return their adopted dog to his/her original foster home, despite distance and any costs that would be required to do so.
