Birdie’s Story

Birdie came into the SNAFU Rescue via a breeder release. Her breeder wanted her to be placed in a loving home and spend the rest of her years being a spoiled pet.

Birdie is a sweet but timid at first, gentle, calm, curious, and laidback little Frenchie girl who finds small bouts of excitement and energy.  She enjoys nibbling on hard plastic toys, zipping around with soft plush toys in tow, and engaging in a gentle game of wrestling with her canine companions. Birdie has a bit of a timid side and might take a few moments to warm up/feel comfortable in new places and around new people.   She doesn’t take long to make herself right at home accepting all the love, pets, and scratchies one can offer her.  Once she is comfortable, you can often find her running around showing off her speed, and finding a toy to engage with.  Birdie’s favorite pastimes include napping and lounging all cuddled up in a soft fleece blanket on the couch catching up on her favorite Netflix shows (if she had a motto it would be couch potato in training). Her favorite activities include cuddling with her trusted people on the comfy couch, playing with every toy in sight, and nibbling on her favorite plastic toys.  Birdie is quite the Velcro dog!  If any of her beloved foster family members make a move out of the room she is occupying you can rest assured Birdie will be following right behind; she has quite a curious nature. In addition to being shy in new situations and around new people, she is unsure around loud, abrupt, and sudden noises; she seeks reassurance from her foster family in those scary moments.  Birdie needs a patient, calm, and understanding family that can help her build confidence in a new environment.  She will also need a family who is willing to spend extra time with her, offering her ongoing patience and introducing her slowly to new things to build her confidence.  There is one thing Birdie cannot resist … unlimited napping and snuggling with those she adores most!  Although she is not a lazy pup it’s pretty much guaranteed you will find her grabbing shorts naps morning, noon, and night!  She currently lives with a few furry foster siblings and will interact in a submissive way (she will engage their attention by nibbling on their toes).  Birdie has a little crush on her male foster sibling and properly ignores her bossy foster sister. She is such a smart cookie adapts to the general mood of her foster companions and is very easy-going when in the presence of other pups.  Birdie is experiencing a big change and because of that, she needs firm and consistent leadership, and positive reinforcement (she loves to be praised) to help her learn proper dog manners in her adoptive home. Birdie seems to get along well with every human she meets (big or small).  She is shy at first but can easily be won over with extra pets and scratchies.  Due to her timid disposition around loud/abrupt noises, we think she would do best in a calmer home.  That being said, Birdie has a young toddler in her foster home and is just the best little girl with him!  We know she’d love to have dog-savvy, calm, gentle children of any age in her adoptive home.  Slow introductions and supervision around children are a must to be sure they and she are kept safe.  She is slowly learning proper dog manners and we think she would have the best success being placed in a home with a balanced dog to help show her the ropes of pet life!  Birdie did meet a cat and was completely ambivalent to them; although she was not properly cat tested, we feel she would be okay with dog-savvy cats.

Birdie’s foster family reports she is doing potty training well but will need to continue to perfect the process. Her adoptive family must be willing to continue to keep her on a regular and consistent schedule to help with her work on potty training in her new home.  Birdie is fully crate trained and although she begrudgingly enters her crate (bribed with a yummy snack of course), she will happily sleep (really tolerates) and remains accident-free in her crate while her foster family happens to be away from the home and at night.  For her safety, we recommend that she is offered a similar secure space as she does not know danger and is still learning what is expected of her inside the home (Birdie will find random dog unapproved items to nibble on). Since Birdie is such a snuggle bug, we know she would love to share a bed with her adoptive family!

Medically, Birdie is in great health.  She has been spayed, had a dental with extractions, nares widened, palate shortened, tonsils removed and updated on vaccinations/dewormings, microchipped, and heartworm tested.  Birdie has been given the okay to adopt by our veterinarian.

Birdie would be happiest in a house with a fenced yard due to her overall timid nature, her inability to proficiently walk on a leash, her uneasiness with stairs (she is hesitant and often requires a pair of loving arms to carry her), and because she is can be startled by a loud noise (she may run).  Birdie loves to spend time outdoors and has a curious nature about her as she explores all the new smells.  A shared-walled townhome or apartment would not be ideal for Birdie as she can share her voice by barking.  We do think she would be a great candidate to take to the office as she loves being around her people all day, is very quiet, and will happily accept extra pets and scratchies. If you are unable to take Birdie to the office or do not have an office…that is okay as she ideally is searching for a family that has a part-time or full-time work-from-home or stay-at-home parent as that would make her the happiest.  Again, Birdie is still learning the ways of pet life, and learning to trust, and needs a calm family to help build her confidence.  She would love a family that can offer her companionship, unlimited pets/scratchies, and an opportunity to be a loved part of the family.  Birdie is such a little gem; she is unbelievably adaptable and just goes with the flow!  She will make an amazing addition to any family; the more hands the better for sweet Birdie!!

disclaimer

Please note that it will likely be at *least* a 3–4 week minimum before you hear back from us after submitting an adoption application.

We typically accept for new applications for a period of 7 days or until 20 applications have been received for any newly available dog. After that time period, the applications are sent on to the foster family for review and that usually takes from at *least* a few days to a week to sort through the applications, etc. Most of our dogs receive several applications so this process does take some time, especially on dogs who are more popular for one reason or another.

We do require phone interviews to be conducted between the foster family and potential adopters, vet reference checks and a home visit to be conducted for all potential adopters, if they are selected as the top choice applicant, which will also take time to complete. That being said, we do always let our applicants know if they are chosen or not.

IF you happen to not be chosen, please don’t feel discouraged as, again, we usually get several applications for each dog, and sometimes it can be very difficult to choose just one adopter. In those cases, we usually offer to keep the applications for adoption on file for any future dogs that come into our rescue.

ALL adopters are required to come and pick up their adopted dogs in person from the dog’s foster home (we do not ship any of our dogs). Please have road/driving transport plans in place to pick up an adopted dog before you apply! While we are not against adopters flying a foster dog in cabin on a commercial flight, please keep in mind that many are not good candidates for flying due to size and/or being a brachycephalic/short nosed breed.

If an adopter cannot keep one of our grads, for any reason at all, at ANY point in time, they *must* be willing and able to return their adopted dog to his/her original foster home, despite distance and any costs that would be required to do so.
