Bernice’s Story
Bernice came into the SNAFU Rescue via a breeder release. Her breeder wanted her to be placed in a loving home and spend the rest of her years being a spoiled pet.
Bernice is a bright, curious, and cuddly French Bulldog who blends snuggly sweetness with bursts of playful mischief! With her beautiful eyes, endearing quirks, and her desire to entertain herself batting around a bouncy ball, Bernice is the kind of companion who brings joy in both the quietest and most playful moments. She’s the perfect mix of laid-back lounging and light-hearted antics — an ideal match for someone who enjoys both cozy cuddles and backyard playtime.
Bernice is a beautifully adaptable pup. She delights in curling up beside her people for long naps, yet she also has a surprisingly playful streak! She adores romping around the yard, stretching into her signature Frenchie yoga poses, and spending time sniffing out all the best scents in her domain. One of her greatest joys? Chasing her beloved tennis ball with pure glee, followed by finding a fluffy toy to de-stuff with focused determination. Chew antlers? Yes, please. Meal time? A daily celebration.
Though she’s still finding her confidence, Bernice’s silly, spirited side shines through more each day. She’s shown great interest in engaging with the resident and visiting dogs in her foster home and would thrive with a calm, patient canine companion who can help her feel secure while encouraging her to play. She’s currently coexisting beautifully with a gentle, easygoing bull boxer nearly twice her size — proving that with the right dog, she can truly flourish.
Bernice is curious about cats and may give them a little chase, but her intentions seem more inquisitive than anything else. With proper introductions and a dog-savvy feline, she could do just fine in a cat-friendly household.
Because Bernice can still be quite skittish — often flattening into a “pancake” when unsure or overwhelmed — she would be best suited to a quiet, stable home without young children. A household with calm, respectful, school-aged kids or adults who understand her need for patience and gentle interactions would be ideal. As with all of our dogs, slow introductions to other dogs and children in the household are a must.
When it comes to sharing space and resources with other dogs, Bernice is still learning. She has shown some mild resource guarding around high-value items, so a structured, attentive home with consistent routines and supervision during shared time is important. Her foster family has managed this easily with simple separation during mealtimes and toy sessions — and Bernice is more than happy to have a comfy bed of her own to stash her prized possessions.
If you’re looking for a dog with a heart full of potential, a love for soft snuggles, and a joyful little spark, Bernice just might be your perfect match. She’s eager to continue blossoming in a home filled with love, structure, and a bit of quiet magic. With the right family, Bernice will reward your patience with unbreakable loyalty, affectionate companionship, and the kind of love only a once-shy dog can give.
Bernice’s foster family happily reports she is still working on potty training and it is a work in progress. She continues to make some progress with a strict and routine outside schedule. It has helped her to have other furry friends for her to follow and mimic desired behaviors like going potty outside. Consistency is her best friend! Her adoptive family will need to be extra patient, willing, and able to keep her on a regular and consistent schedule for her continued potty-training efforts.
Bernice is fully crate-trained (without accidents) and actually likes her crate! Since Bernice is a master snuggler, we know she would love to eventually share her human bed at night once she is fully potty trained; but not before. For her safety, we recommend a similar arrangement when her humans are away from the home and/or when she is left unsupervised, so she is safe and secure while no one is at home. Bernice does not know danger and is still learning how to be a pet.
Medically, Bernice seems to be in great health. She has been spayed, had BOAS surgery to address her breathing issues, had a dental with extractions, updated on vaccinations/dewormings, heartworm tested, microchipped, and has been given the okay to adopt by our veterinarian. Bernice does still have some additional worn-down teeth. They are not mobile, so they were not removed at this time but will need them monitored for as some of them will eventually need to come out.
Bernice is very adaptable, and we think she would do well in almost any type of home, but would do best in a house with a fenced yard since she is working on perfecting potty training and does not know danger. She loves to explore all the smells and roam about and a fenced-in yard would offer her safety and security. Sometimes her nose gets the best of her and her curiosity gets the best of her!
Bernice has perfectly mastered going up and down stairs, so a multi-level home would be okay for her as long as there are minimal stairs. Bernice has a typical Frenchie body and limiting stairs is in her best interest. Since Bernice is not yet leash trained, an apartment setting would be tough UNLESS there was a ground-level adjacent fenced-in area available as she finalizes the art of potty training. She is an overall quiet pup with a few normal barks, so a share-walled home is okay for her! Part-time or Full-time work from home or a stay-at-home parent? Bernice would absolutely love that but is not required. If her family works outside the home, a midday potty break would be necessary for her. She would do well in a quiet and calm office setting if her adoptive family wanted to take her to the office. Overall, she is looking for a low-key, quiet family that enjoys their personal space invaded and will accept every ounce of love Bernice has to offer! Ideally, Bernice would love a balanced, patient, and sweet dog companion to pal around with. Bernice would love someone who is around often to offer her unlimited snuggles, unlimited pets, and couch time. Bernice loves nothing more than the joys and comforts petlife has to offer!
Bernice is ready to find her forever home—one filled with patience, understanding, and lots of love. She promises to return that love tenfold, along with plenty of laughs, snuggles, and unforgettable adventures!

disclaimer
Please note that it will likely be at *least* a 3–4 week minimum before you hear back from us after submitting an adoption application.
We typically accept for new applications for a period of 7 days or until 20 applications have been received for any newly available dog. After that time period, the applications are sent on to the foster family for review and that usually takes from at *least* a few days to a week to sort through the applications, etc. Most of our dogs receive several applications so this process does take some time, especially on dogs who are more popular for one reason or another.
We do require phone interviews to be conducted between the foster family and potential adopters, vet reference checks and a home visit to be conducted for all potential adopters, if they are selected as the top choice applicant, which will also take time to complete. That being said, we do always let our applicants know if they are chosen or not.
IF you happen to not be chosen, please don’t feel discouraged as, again, we usually get several applications for each dog, and sometimes it can be very difficult to choose just one adopter. In those cases, we usually offer to keep the applications for adoption on file for any future dogs that come into our rescue.
ALL adopters are required to come and pick up their adopted dogs in person from the dog’s foster home (we do not ship any of our dogs). Please have road/driving transport plans in place to pick up an adopted dog before you apply! While we are not against adopters flying a foster dog in cabin on a commercial flight, please keep in mind that many are not good candidates for flying due to size and/or being a brachycephalic/short nosed breed.
If an adopter cannot keep one of our grads, for any reason at all, at ANY point in time, they *must* be willing and able to return their adopted dog to his/her original foster home, despite distance and any costs that would be required to do so.

SNAFU Rescue is a 501(c)(3) tax deductible non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes all short-nosed breeds in need.
