Bear’s Story

Bear found his way into SNAFU via breeder release. His breeder wanted him placed in a loving home to live the rest of his life as a cherished pet.

He has been learning the ropes of living in a loving pet home, and he is getting accustomed to pet life!  He starts his day with a few coos and a big stretch, quickly heading outside for a potty break and then will bounce right on over to his food dish and eagerly await breakfast.  He might even give a little anticipatory bark as you get his breakfast ready – meal time is his favorite time of day. He is looking for his forever home, where play is the name of the game, cuddles are endless, and snacks are a priority. Is that your home? Keep reading to learn more about Bear and what type of home would work best for him.

Bear is an active, playful, cuddly, outgoing, friendly young English Bulldog puppy.  He loves to chew, play with his foster brother (a grumpy old man English Bulldog), chase the cat, find cords to chew on, hunt for food, and chew (see what we did there, he’s a chewer!).  This extremely smart boy loves to play, play, and play all day!  He enjoys romping around the house and exploring every inch of his surroundings.  This curious boy is a master at the keep away game; he will inevitably find an item he is NOT supposed to get his little paws on (read shoes, Legos, cords) and will make a game out of trying to get it away from him. However, if you ask him if he is hungry, he will drop what he is doing to get a treat or to be fed! Did we mention he loves mealtime? He is HIGHLY food motivated.  For that reason, he should be kept on a feeding schedule versus being free-fed and any potential furry sibling’s food should not be kept down where Bear could find it.

Just like with food, Bear cannot get enough sunshine or explore the outdoors and will romp around the yard with his furry friend or head out for a solo exploration.  After he runs a few laps around the yard, he will head back indoors to find his furry foster sibling in hopes he wants to engage him in some more play or he will search out his foster mom while she works.  If he finds his foster brother in the playing mood, Bear will never turn down a wrestling match or a game of tug-o-war.  He truly believes every pet he meets, and every person that comes across his path not only wants to play but is his new BFF.  He is working on picking up on signals that it might not be play time (he’s a little dense, aka, bulldog stubborn).  While he is ok with solo play and exploration, he truly just wants to be with his people or foster sibling all the time as he finds comfort in their presence and the attention he is offered.  After all that play and exploration he will settle in for a much-needed puppy nap.  Then, the play cycle starts again (after he is reminded of the need for a quick potty break).  Fully refreshed, he is off circling the house following his foster sibling around, mimicking his behaviors and stealing all of his toys.  This boy is smart! He figured out the doggie door within hours – all by watching his foster brother. Bear’s overall fun, rambunctious, happy disposition allows him to get along with his furry foster sibling. However, he does not know danger and should always be supervised as he has a tendency to find items he is not supposed to get into!  Bear seems to get along with big and small dogs – but he does not understand if a new furry pal is not immediately his BFF – slow intros are a must to help him not come on too strong!  Likewise, he has yet to meet any human, big or small, that he hasn’t fallen head over paws for.  Because of his lighthearted disposition, we feel Bear will do perfectly well with another dog of any size and with dog savvy, gentle, respectful children of any age (but keep in mind, he is still in the puppy nibbling phase).  We also feel Bear would thrive in a multi-dog household as he emulates other dog behaviors and picks up quickly on what is expected in the home and proper dog manners.  Slow introductions to other dogs and children in the household is a must and he should always be supervised to make sure both he and they are kept safe.  While he coexists with the foster family cat, he gives chase and does not understand that the cat is not interested in his puppy antics.  His dense (stubborn) self might do best in a home without a cat or small animals (ferrets, gerbils, birds, and the like) to protect them from his playful persistent self.

Bear is still working on potty training and his accidents are becoming fewer and further between.  He does best with regular reminders to go outside.  As with all of our dogs, any adopter must be patient and willing to continue working on his potty-training success as he acclimates to his new home and surroundings. He is still a very young dog in need of a consistent outside routine and a signal for potty. Bear is 100% crate trained and does not have any accidents in his crate.  When he has had a day full of play and is tired, he will sleep all night without complaint in his crate.  If he hasn’t gotten all his puppy energy out before bedtime, he may whine for a minute or two. If the family wanted, he would be a candidate to share a human bed.  When his foster family leaves the house, he has an x-pen area set up for him, filled with a comfy bed, toys and some water – he does great in there and will either settle in for a nap or grab some chew bones or a treat bone to pass the time. He is diligently working on his leash skills and has enjoyed walks alongside his foster sibling.  His foster family children have also successfully taken him out on walks – he does not give chase but definitely wants to meet anyone else out walking around.  He’s sure they will be his new BFFs as well.

Medically, Bear is in great health!  He has been neutered, microchipped, updated on vaccinations/dewormings, and has been given a clean bill of health by our veterinarian!

Bear would do great in any type of home!  He is champ at going up and down stairs – he is even trying to run up them (down, he thankfully slows down).  Since he does love to explore the yard and run all around the fence, a house with a completely closed fenced yard will be preferred for him (as opposed to a multiple floor apartment style dwelling).  Since Bear is quite a people’s pup, we think he would love to eventually go to work with his new family if they wanted to take him with them to the office.  He is in need of some basic training before entering the work space but with some consistent work he would do just fine!  If his people are not able to take him to work with them, no problem at all – he’s completely happy sleeping at home for a few hours as long as he has a warm soft bed in his x-pen and his people can arrange for a potty break for him!  He will need regular play sessions in the evenings and plenty of walks/outdoor time if he is able to nap away the day while the family is at work or school. Once he learns the ropes of pet life and exits the puppy-chewing stage, he may not need to be penned up when his family leaves the home.  Bear is a little snuggle bug looking for a home that has an active family to dote on him, can include him in most family outdoor activities, can offer him the exercise he desires, an engaging furry friend to play with and lots of love and attention. Bear is still a very young dog that will require a little extra patience as he is guided into what is expected of him.  He is a very smart dog that is food motivated so we know he will pick up on things VERY quickly!  Bear will quickly have you wrapped around his little paw!

If you feel like your family might be the perfect forever home for Bear, please submit an adoption application for him.

disclaimer

Please note that it will likely be at *least* a 3–4 week minimum before you hear back from us after submitting an adoption application.

We typically accept for new applications for a period of 7 days or until 20 applications have been received for any newly available dog. After that time period, the applications are sent on to the foster family for review and that usually takes from at *least* a few days to a week to sort through the applications, etc. Most of our dogs receive several applications so this process does take some time, especially on dogs who are more popular for one reason or another.

We do require phone interviews to be conducted between the foster family and potential adopters, vet reference checks and a home visit to be conducted for all potential adopters, if they are selected as the top choice applicant, which will also take time to complete. That being said, we do always let our applicants know if they are chosen or not.

IF you happen to not be chosen, please don’t feel discouraged as, again, we usually get several applications for each dog, and sometimes it can be very difficult to choose just one adopter. In those cases, we usually offer to keep the applications for adoption on file for any future dogs that come into our rescue.

ALL adopters are required to come and pick up their adopted dogs in person from the dog’s foster home (we do not ship any of our dogs). Please have road/driving transport plans in place to pick up an adopted dog before you apply! While we are not against adopters flying a foster dog in cabin on a commercial flight, please keep in mind that many are not good candidates for flying due to size and/or being a brachycephalic/short nosed breed.

If an adopter cannot keep one of our grads, for any reason at all, at ANY point in time, they *must* be willing and able to return their adopted dog to his/her original foster home, despite distance and any costs that would be required to do so.
