Savana’s Story
Savana came into the SNAFU Rescue via a breeder release. Her breeder wanted her to be placed in a loving home and spend the rest of her years being a spoiled pet.
Meet Savana – a gentle, skittish little Pug with a tender heart and a playful spirit just waiting to fully emerge. Savana is very nervous around people she doesn’t know and needs time, patience, and a quiet environment to feel safe. Her past is unknown, but whatever she experienced has left her cautious about new people and especially uncertain around men. Even after six months with her foster family, she has never fully warmed up to her foster dad, so a home where she can build trust at her own pace will be incredibly important.
Once Savana feels comfortable, though, you get to see the sweet, silly girl underneath that nervous exterior. She absolutely loves being outside, where she can run around the yard, soak up the sunshine, and enjoy a little freedom. She’ll happily play fetch—although she hasn’t quite mastered the “bring it back” part! She also has a wonderfully cozy side and is perfectly content curling up on the couch, getting pets, or settling in with one of her favorite bones. And when it comes to chewing, Savana is a true connoisseur. Himalayan chews are her absolute favorite, and she can happily spend hours working away on a good bone.
Savana absolutely loves other dogs, and they are much more than playmates to her—they are her confidence builders. She looks to her canine friends to help her decide what is safe and what might be scary, and having a confident, friendly dog beside her helps her navigate the world with much more ease. She has adored every dog she’s been around, including a Boxer she completely idolized and followed around as though he could do no wrong. She gets along beautifully with her foster sisters and has a very passive, easygoing personality with other dogs. For Savana, having another dog in her forever home isn’t simply preferred—it is an important part of helping her feel secure.
Savana has been around young children, including children under eight, but their activity and unpredictability were simply too much for her. She cowered and showed many signs of fear, so a home with young children would not be a good fit. Older, respectful teenagers may be possible, but honestly, a calm adult home without children would be ideal. Savana needs people who understand that trust cannot be rushed and who will allow her to approach, explore, and connect on her own timeline.
Savana is the kind of girl who will need you to earn her heart rather than expect it immediately. She may hide or hesitate when something feels unfamiliar, but with patience, kindness, and the reassurance of a canine companion, she is slowly learning that the world can be a safe and wonderful place. Her family will need to celebrate the little victories—coming a little closer, accepting a new person, choosing to relax beside you, or confidently following another dog into a new experience.
If you’re looking for a quiet, gentle companion and have the patience to let a frightened little soul blossom, Savana could be incredibly special. She needs a loving, understanding family who will never force her to be brave before she’s ready, but instead will show her—day after day—that she is safe, cherished, and finally home. With the security of another dog by her side and people willing to give her the time she deserves, Savana has every opportunity to become the happy, affectionate little Pug she was always meant to be.
Savana’s foster family is proud to share that she’s doing wonderfully with her potty training and has made great progress in learning the household routine. She has occasional accidents—roughly two per week—and they tend to happen on weekends when her schedule changes and her routine is a little less predictable. For the most part, though, Savana has a good understanding of what’s expected of her and does a great job communicating when she needs to go. When nature calls, she’ll often start sniffing and spinning in little circles, giving her humans a pretty reliable cue that it’s time to head outside. She truly thrives with consistency, and maintaining a predictable routine will help her continue to succeed in her forever home.
Savana is also comfortably crate trained and does well settling in her kennel while her foster family is at work. She gets a midday break with a dog sitter before returning to her crate until her humans are home. Having that predictable rhythm works well for her and gives her a comfortable, familiar place to relax while the house is quiet. As she becomes more confident, she enjoys spending her time with her family whenever they’re home, especially when she can curl up nearby and simply be part of the household.
At night, Savana prefers a different kind of cozy—she loves sleeping in the human bed! For her, bedtime is more than just a place to sleep; curling up beside her people is an important bonding experience and helps her feel safe and connected. She absolutely treasures that quiet closeness. Savana’s combination of good potty habits, crate training, and love of sleeping beside her humans makes her a wonderful little companion who thrives when life is predictable, calm, and filled with plenty of reassurance.
Medically, Savana seems to be in great health. She has been spayed, had a dental with extractions, updated on vaccinations/dewormings, heartworm tested, microchipped, and has been given the okay to adopt by our veterinarian.
Savana recently completed her heartworm treatment, and we are thrilled to share that she has successfully completed the entire treatment protocol! Heartworm treatment is a significant process that requires multiple medications, strict rest and careful monitoring as the adult worms are eliminated from the heart and blood vessels. Savana handled her treatment beautifully and has made it through this challenging chapter. She is now on the other side of heartworm disease and ready to move forward with her healthy, happy life. Her forever family will need to be diligent about keeping her on monthly heartworm prevention, as preventing a future infection is essential to protecting her from ever having to go through this difficult treatment again.
Savana will do best in a calm, peaceful home with a securely fenced yard where she can feel safe while enjoying some of her favorite things—running, exploring, sunbathing, or simply finding a quiet spot to lie down when she wants a little alone time. A fence is essential, as Savana could easily run off if given the opportunity. And when it comes to stairs, this girl is a total stair champ! She confidently handles all kinds of stairs, can jump onto the couch, and happily uses her ramp when it’s available. She’s an adaptable little girl who knows exactly how to get where she wants to go!
An adult-only home would be ideal for Savana, although a home with respectful teenage children may be a possibility. She needs a household without chaos, constant activity, or lots of unfamiliar people coming and going. An office environment would likely be overwhelming for her, so a part-time or full-time work-from-home family, retiree, or someone who is home much of the day would be a wonderful fit. Savana does not particularly enjoy being kenneled for long periods, so a home where she can spend more of her day loose and near her people would be ideal.
Most importantly, Savana needs another dog in her forever home. Her canine friends are a tremendous source of confidence for her, and she looks to them for reassurance when something feels unfamiliar or scary. A friendly, confident dog can help Savana navigate new experiences and remind her that the world isn’t such a frightening place. She has come so incredibly far since March, and watching that transformation has been one of the most rewarding parts of her journey.
Savana’s forever family will need to be exceptionally patient and understanding. She is still learning, and there will be moments when she hesitates or needs extra reassurance. She doesn’t need someone who expects her to instantly become a social butterfly—she needs someone who will understand her caution, celebrate her progress, and give her the time and love necessary to continue blossoming. In return, Savana will happily repay you with affection, companionship, and plenty of those wonderful little glimpses of personality that make her so special.
And then there’s Savana’s wonderfully sassy side! This girl is extremely food motivated, and dinner is serious business. When mealtime arrives, she may celebrate by jumping around and racing to her bowl—and if dinner is running late, she is absolutely capable of letting her people know about it! She may also politely—or not so politely—inform you that her dog ramp is not where it belongs and needs to be moved back to its proper location. These little opinions are part of what makes the increasingly confident Savana so endearing.
Savana has already come such a long way, and she deserves a family who sees the beautiful girl she is becoming. She needs patience, consistency, kindness, and an abundance of love and pets. If you can give her the time to trust, the security to feel safe, a canine friend to lean on, and a peaceful place to call home, Savana will continue to surprise you with just how much she has to give.
If you feel like your family might be the perfect forever home for Savana, please submit an adoption application for her today!!
disclaimer
Please note that it will likely be at *least* a 3–4 week minimum before you hear back from us after submitting an adoption application.
We typically accept for new applications for a period of 7 days or until 20 applications have been received for any newly available dog. After that time period, the applications are sent on to the foster family for review and that usually takes from at *least* a few days to a week to sort through the applications, etc. Most of our dogs receive several applications so this process does take some time, especially on dogs who are more popular for one reason or another.
We do require phone interviews to be conducted between the foster family and potential adopters, vet reference checks and a home visit to be conducted for all potential adopters, if they are selected as the top choice applicant, which will also take time to complete. That being said, we do always let our applicants know if they are chosen or not.
IF you happen to not be chosen, please don’t feel discouraged as, again, we usually get several applications for each dog, and sometimes it can be very difficult to choose just one adopter. In those cases, we usually offer to keep the applications for adoption on file for any future dogs that come into our rescue.
ALL adopters are required to come and pick up their adopted dogs in person from the dog’s foster home (we do not ship any of our dogs). Please have road/driving transport plans in place to pick up an adopted dog before you apply! While we are not against adopters flying a foster dog in cabin on a commercial flight, please keep in mind that many are not good candidates for flying due to size and/or being a brachycephalic/short nosed breed.
If an adopter cannot keep one of our grads, for any reason at all, at ANY point in time, they *must* be willing and able to return their adopted dog to his/her original foster home, despite distance and any costs that would be required to do so.
SNAFU Rescue is a 501(c)(3) tax deductible non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes all short-nosed breeds in need.
