Russell’s Story

Russell came into the SNAFU Rescue via a private party. His owner sadly passed away and the family wanted him to be placed in a loving home and spend the rest of his years being a spoiled pet.

Russell is equal parts happy-go-lucky energy and laid-back cuddle bug! This adorable French Bulldog loves his people, loves attention, and absolutely LOVES food. In fact, those two things are pretty much his favorite things in the world. Mention either one and Russell’s excitement level goes straight through the roof! He’s an enthusiastic little guy who just wants to be involved in whatever is happening, especially if it means getting some love or a tasty treat.

Russell is incredibly social and has never met a personal-space bubble he thought he needed to respect. When he’s excited, he’ll happily jump all over people and dogs alike because, in his mind, everyone is simply a potential new best friend. His enthusiasm is endearing and comes from a place of pure affection—this boy just wants to be loved! He would be wonderful with children of any age, provided they’re comfortable with an exuberant Frenchie who may enthusiastically get right in their face for attention.

Russell enjoys the company of other dogs and is quite submissive with them. He hasn’t shown much interest in actually wrestling or playing yet, but he loves following the other dogs around and being part of the group. He would do well with a canine companion who enjoys having a friendly little shadow tagging along.

Despite his bursts of excitement, Russell has a wonderfully relaxed side, too. Once the excitement settles down, he’s happy to curl up, cuddle with his people, and soak up all the attention he can get. He truly seems happiest when he’s surrounded by people and knows he’s included.

Russell is also extremely food motivated, which should make training him a lot of fun! He can get VERY excited when food appears and sometimes forgets that everyone else would also like a turn. He isn’t aggressive at all—he simply gets so enthusiastic that he tries to get himself to the front of the line, occasionally putting his nose or even a few toes in the way when treats are being handed out. With some patience and gentle work on impulse control and waiting his turn, we expect this lovable food fanatic will catch on quickly.

Life with Russell will never be boring. He’s affectionate, social, wonderfully goofy, and completely convinced that personal space is optional. Whether he’s following his canine friends around, bouncing with excitement over dinner, or settling in for a good cuddle, Russell just wants to be where the love is. And if you’re willing to give him plenty of it, he’ll happily give you all of his right back.

Russell is working hard at his house training and has already made some wonderful progress! He is doing much better and, best of all, has stopped having accidents in his crate. He does still need a very consistent potty schedule and frequent opportunities to go outside, but his foster family is seeing steady improvement. With continued routine, supervision, and plenty of positive reinforcement, we expect this happy boy will continue to master his potty manners.

Russell is also very comfortable in his crate and doesn’t mind spending time there at all. In fact, he seems to genuinely enjoy having his own quiet, peaceful space. He happily goes into his crate, settles down, and sleeps there while his foster parent is at work. His crate has become a safe and comfortable place for him to relax, making it a great tool as he continues adjusting to his new life.

More than anything, though, Russell loves his people! He wants to be wherever the attention and affection are happening and would eventually love nothing more than to share the bed, curl up beside his person, and snuggle the night away. He’s an affectionate little guy who thrives on companionship and simply wants to feel included.

Russell is making great strides, and with a family willing to keep him on a consistent routine while continuing his potty training, he’s sure to keep blossoming. Give this sweet boy a safe place to rest, plenty of love, and a cozy spot beside you, and Russell will be one very happy Frenchie.

Medically, Russell seems to be in good health.  He has been neutered, had a dental with extractions, nares widened, updated on vaccinations/dewormings, microchipped, and has been given the okay for adoption by our veterinarian!  He does suffer from those pesky seasonal allergies; a daily OTC allergy medication can keep them at bay.

Russell is also being treated for suspected idiopathic vasculitis affecting his ears. In simple terms, vasculitis means inflammation involving the small blood vessels that supply the skin, which can reduce healthy blood flow to the delicate tissue along the ears and lead to changes such as redness, crusting, thinning, discoloration, or small areas of tissue damage. “Idiopathic” simply means that, at this time, there isn’t a known underlying cause. The good news is that Russell’s condition is being actively managed with pentoxifylline, a medication that helps improve blood flow and oxygen delivery to affected tissues, along with an antibiotic and topical over-the-counter mousse and balm to support the health and healing of his ears. He is expected to remain on pentoxifylline for at least 6–8 weeks, and the appearance of his ears will be an important indicator of how well he is responding. Vasculitis can be a bit of a “peaks and valleys” condition, meaning it may improve and then flare again, so his ears will need to be monitored throughout his life and medication may be needed in perpetuity. With appropriate treatment and attention to early changes, many dogs can be successfully managed, and Russell is already on the right path.

Russell would thrive in an active, loving home where he can be part of the action! He is an enthusiastic, social little guy who loves people, attention, adventures, and having friends—both human and canine. He’s still learning and adjusting to life in a home, but he’s doing wonderfully and is proving to be a pretty easy pup to care for. He’ll need a family willing to provide some guidance, structure, and consistency as he continues learning, but he’ll happily repay them with an enormous amount of love.

A fenced yard would be ideal for Russell and is preferred for his safety. He’s active, quick, and enthusiastic, so having a secure place where he can run, explore, and burn off some of that Frenchie energy would be a wonderful outlet for him. He also does great with stairs and would love a family who enjoys getting out and about with him. An active household would be a particularly great match, whether that means walks, adventures, trips around town, or simply having plenty of opportunities to be involved in family life.

Russell absolutely adores his people and would love a family that is home often or has the flexibility to include him throughout the day. He would make a fantastic office pup and would be thrilled to accompany his person to work, meet new friends, and supervise everything happening around him. He’s the kind of dog who wants to be included in whatever you’re doing and would happily follow his people from one adventure to the next.

When it comes to other dogs, Russell enjoys their company and would love having a canine friend to follow around and hang out with. He’s quite submissive and social, and while he hasn’t shown much interest in rough-and-tumble play yet, he clearly enjoys being part of a pack. He would also be wonderful with children and could fit nicely into a family with kids of any age, provided everyone understands that Russell has absolutely no concept of personal space and may enthusiastically get right in their faces when he’s excited!

Russell could even do well in an apartment (an adjacent fenced-in yard would be ideal) or other shared-wall home because he is generally a pretty quiet guy. His energy level is much more likely to be expressed through enthusiastic zooming, following his people around, and seeking out attention than through barking. As long as he gets appropriate exercise, companionship, and opportunities to burn off his energy, he should be a delightful companion.

At the end of the day, Russell is looking for a family who is ready to embrace his big personality, goofy enthusiasm, and enormous capacity for love. He’ll need a little guidance, plenty of structure, extra snacks, belly rubs, and a whole lotta love—but in return, you’ll get a social, affectionate, adventure-loving Frenchie who thinks being with his people is the very best place in the world.
