Picasso’s Story

Picasso came into the SNAFU Rescue via a private party. His prior family wanted him to be placed with a breed specific rescue to help find him a loving home and spend the rest of his years being a spoiled pet.

Meet Picasso — a fun-loving, outgoing French Bulldog with a huge personality, endless energy, and an even bigger heart! This handsome boy is the definition of a social butterfly. He loves people, loves dogs, loves being part of the action, and is happiest when something fun is happening around him. Whether he’s heading out for a walk, wrestling with his canine friends, playing tug-of-war, or proudly parading around with a stolen shoe, Picasso is always ready to make life a little more entertaining!

Picasso is an incredibly social and affectionate boy who absolutely loves his people. He doesn’t believe in sitting on the sidelines — if something is happening, he wants in! He’ll happily follow along with whatever you’re doing and soak up every bit of attention he can get. Belly rubs are one of his absolute favorite things, and he has no problem rolling right onto his back to let you know he’s ready for some loving. Although he can be a little wild, bouncy, and exuberant when he’s excited, once the fun winds down, his sweet side comes shining through. He loves to relax, snuggle, and enjoy some quiet time with his favorite people.

This boy has plenty of energy and would love a family that enjoys an active lifestyle. Walks are one of his favorite activities, and he also gets a huge kick out of playing with his foster dog siblings. He currently lives with both a male and female dog and gets along wonderfully with both. Picasso loves to wrestle, romp, and play, but he also does a nice job listening when the resident dogs give him a correction or tell him he’s had enough. He genuinely enjoys canine companionship and would be thrilled to have a compatible dog friend to keep him busy, although he could also be perfectly happy as an only dog where he gets to soak up all the attention for himself.

Picasso is a playful little goofball with a particular fondness for toys. Tug-of-war and plush toys are favorites, and he loves having someone willing to join in the fun. His current guilty pleasure, however, is stealing any shoe that happens to be left on the floor and proudly racing around the house with it, hoping someone will chase him. We’re working on that one! His silly antics and playful personality are guaranteed to keep his family laughing.

Picasso currently lives with a cat and has shown no aggression toward him. At first, he paid very little attention to the cat, but as he became more comfortable in his foster home, he occasionally started trying to chase or play with him, sometimes even offering a playful bow as an invitation. His behavior has appeared playful rather than aggressive, but because Picasso is such an energetic boy, a dog-savvy cat who is comfortable around playful dogs would be the best fit. Any introductions to cats or other small animals should be handled thoughtfully and with appropriate supervision.

Picasso has not been around children while in foster care, so we can’t say for certain how he would do. Because he is extremely social, affectionate, and people-oriented, we expect he’ll enjoy having people around him, but his enthusiastic personality is an important consideration. He is still learning not to jump up when he gets excited, and a happy, energetic Frenchie can easily knock over a very young or small child. Dog-savvy children who understand how to interact appropriately with dogs would likely be the best fit, with supervision and continued training as he learns his manners.

Picasso would thrive with a family that enjoys an active, social, and playful dog and wants to include him in everyday life. He’d love regular harness/leashed walks, plenty of interactive play, canine companionship if the match is right, and lots of affection from his people. He could happily be the only dog and soak up all the attention, or he could enjoy having a compatible canine playmate. A family willing to continue working on his manners, house-training, and crate training — while also giving him appropriate outlets for all that energy — will bring out the very best in him.

Previous French Bulldog or short-nosed breed experience is not required but would be a huge plus. Picasso could absolutely do well with a committed first-time Frenchie owner who is willing to learn about the breed and his specific needs, particularly his history of IVDD. What he really needs is someone who understands that this goofy, energetic boy comes with a big personality, a big heart, and a whole lot of enthusiasm!

Picasso is sweet, affectionate, social, playful, and just plain fun. He wants to be where his people are, doing whatever they’re doing, and making sure nobody forgets to give him a belly rub along the way. If you’re looking for a happy, active Frenchie who will keep you laughing, keep you moving, and then happily curl up beside you when the day is done, Picasso just might be your guy. 💙🐾

Picasso’s foster family is happy to report that he’s doing wonderfully with his potty training routine but it is still a work in progress. He came into foster care pee-pad trained, and his foster family has been successfully transitioning him to pottying outside. He does very well when kept on a consistent schedule and even understands the cue “go poo-poo.” He is still working on his house-training routine, so his forever family should be prepared to continue reinforcing his progress.

Crate training is another work in progress. Picasso is not yet comfortable in a crate, so he will need continued positive, gradual training rather than being expected to immediately settle in one. For now, when left alone, he stays safely in a small designated area separated by a baby gate. His foster family has not observed any resource guarding from Picasso with people or other dogs. He happily eats, plays with toys, shares space, and plays with his foster siblings without issue. He has shown no food, toy, or space guarding in his foster home.

For his continued success, Picasso’s adoptive family should be patient, consistent, and willing to maintain his current potty schedule. He’s such a smart and eager-to-please boy that with routine and gentle guidance, he’ll continue to shine.

Medically, Picasso seems to be in good health. He has been neutered, updated on vaccinations/dewormings, heartworm tested, microchipped, and has been given the okay to adopt by our veterinarian.

Picasso does have an important medical history that his forever family should understand. He was surrendered following an IVDD flare-up, but he has since been evaluated by a veterinarian and is currently doing extremely well. He is appropriately active, engaging with the resident dogs, enjoying walks, and showing no current limitations in his everyday activities. Even though he is doing wonderfully now, IVDD can recur, so his family will need to remain mindful of his back and understand that future veterinary care could potentially be necessary.  A good quality joint supplement and fish oil would be a benefit to Picasso long term.

Because of his IVDD history, Picasso’s foster family takes sensible precautions to help protect his spine. He uses dog stairs rather than jumping on and off furniture (which he should NEVER DO), and his forever family should continue avoiding all  jumping and avoiding activities that put unnecessary strain on his back. His adopter should be prepared to follow these precautions even when Picasso feels great and is convinced he can launch himself off the couch like an Olympic athlete!

Picasso is a fairly adaptable little guy who could thrive in several types of homes as long as his family is prepared for his energy, enthusiasm, and ongoing training needs. A house would likely be the easiest fit while he continues working on crate training and becoming comfortable when left alone, as he may bark or cry when upset and can alert-bark at noises or people passing by. An apartment/shared wall dwelling may not be best suitable for him.

Picasso can use stairs comfortably and even does the cutest little bunny hops going up and down, but because of his history of an IVDD flare-up, his veterinarian recommends limiting stair use whenever possible. His family should be comfortable carrying him when needed; a ranch-style walk-out home is best suited for him.  A securely fenced yard would be wonderful but is not required. Picasso loves walks and can get his exercise that way, but he must always be leashed with a harness (never a collar) outside of a securely fenced area because he is fast, adventurous, and will run if given the opportunity. An active family who enjoys walks, playtime, and including their dog in everyday life would be a wonderful fit for him.

Picasso would especially benefit from a family that is home frequently or has a flexible schedule while he continues working on potty training, basic manners, and crate training. He is a very social, affectionate boy who wants to be involved in everything his people are doing. He could also make a great office buddy once his potty training is established, especially with a walk or play session beforehand to help him settle.

Picasso could happily live as an only dog or with a compatible canine companion. He loves playing with other dogs and would enjoy having a friend, but he is equally happy soaking up attention from his people. More than anything, he needs a family who will appreciate his funny, energetic personality, continue his training with patience and consistency, protect his back with appropriate precautions, and make him a true part of the family.

Picasso is a sweet, silly, affectionate little guy with a huge personality and so much love to give. He deserves a family who will include him, play with him, take him on adventures, give him plenty of belly rubs, and love him like crazy. 💙🐾

If you feel like your family might be the perfect forever home for Picasso, please submit an adoption application for him today!!

disclaimer

Please note that it will likely be at *least* a 3–4 week minimum before you hear back from us after submitting an adoption application.

We typically accept for new applications for a period of 7 days or until 20 applications have been received for any newly available dog. After that time period, the applications are sent on to the foster family for review and that usually takes from at *least* a few days to a week to sort through the applications, etc. Most of our dogs receive several applications so this process does take some time, especially on dogs who are more popular for one reason or another.

We do require phone interviews to be conducted between the foster family and potential adopters, vet reference checks and a home visit to be conducted for all potential adopters, if they are selected as the top choice applicant, which will also take time to complete. That being said, we do always let our applicants know if they are chosen or not.

IF you happen to not be chosen, please don’t feel discouraged as, again, we usually get several applications for each dog, and sometimes it can be very difficult to choose just one adopter. In those cases, we usually offer to keep the applications for adoption on file for any future dogs that come into our rescue.

ALL adopters are required to come and pick up their adopted dogs in person from the dog’s foster home (we do not ship any of our dogs). Please have road/driving transport plans in place to pick up an adopted dog before you apply! While we are not against adopters flying a foster dog in cabin on a commercial flight, please keep in mind that many are not good candidates for flying due to size and/or being a brachycephalic/short nosed breed.

If an adopter cannot keep one of our grads, for any reason at all, at ANY point in time, they *must* be willing and able to return their adopted dog to his/her original foster home, despite distance and any costs that would be required to do so.
