Mildred’s Story

Mildred came into the SNAFU Rescue via a breeder release. Her breeder wanted her to be placed in a loving home and spend the rest of her years being a spoiled pet.

Meet Mildred — the irresistible French Bulldog with a big heart, a playful spirit, and an endless supply of love to give!

Mildred is a cheerful, social butterfly who thrives on companionship — whether it’s cuddling with her people, playing with her furry friends, or tagging along on a short walk to explore the world. She’s a little dog with a huge personality and a zest for life that’s downright contagious!

While Mildred has a wobbly gait that limits her activity somewhat, she certainly doesn’t let that slow her down. She’s been cleared for short 30-minute walks, which she absolutely adores — every new smell, sound, and person is a reason to wag that little nub of a tail. When playtime rolls around, she’s quick to grab her favorite toy or Benebone and show it off proudly (and yes, she insists on pulling every toy out of the bin before settling down). Her happy place is right in the middle of her people and her toys — sometimes even drifting to sleep with a soft plush toy still in her mouth.

Mildred’s social nature shines wherever she goes. She gets along wonderfully with dogs of all sizes and loves saying hello at the dog park or on walks. She’s currently living with a senior dog and respects his space beautifully, though she’s always up for a friendly game if anyone’s interested. She’s also great with cats — her foster cat friend and she are known to wrestle and play together, and their bond is absolutely adorable!

She hasn’t had much direct exposure to children in her foster home, but she’s met several out and about and has always been calm, sweet, and gentle. Based on her temperament, she’d likely do well with respectful, dog-savvy kids (around age six and up).

When it comes to manners, Mildred is a smart cookie! She knows her basic commands like “sit” and “stay” and has been learning how to safely use the pet stairs to get on and off furniture. She’s very food-motivated and eager to please — positive reinforcement goes a long way with this girl. The only time she’s shown a hint of sass is if another dog gets too close to her prized Benebone — she may give a tiny grumble, but it never escalates, and she’s otherwise very polite about sharing everything else.

Mildred’s perfect day includes a balance of short adventures, playtime, and plenty of snuggles. She’s the definition of a Velcro dog — she doesn’t want to miss out on anything her people are doing and will happily follow you from room to room just to be near you. Whether you’re working from home, watching TV, or relaxing with a book, Mildred will be your loyal little shadow and your most loving companion.

Because Mildred is a French Bulldog with a wobbly gait, her forever family should have short-nosed breed experience and understand her care needs. She’ll need careful activity management to keep her safe, ongoing at-home strengthening exercises, avoid all jumping on/off items (she has learned to use the doggy stairs to get up and off furniture) and regular cleaning of her ear (which has an old hematoma) and tail pocket.

Mildred would thrive in a home where she can be part of the action — included in daily life, spoiled with love, and given a comfy spot to snooze surrounded by her toys. She’d do great as the only dog or with other friendly, balanced pets who respect her gentle, playful style.

If you’re looking for a sweet, affectionate, and social companion who loves with her whole heart and wants to be part of everything you do, Mildred is your girl. She’s ready to bring endless joy, laughter, and love to her forever family — and she’ll do it all with that signature Frenchie charm.

Mildred is ready to meet her people — could that be you? 💕

Mildred’s foster family is happy to report that she’s doing wonderfully with her potty routine and has very few accidents! She’s on a consistent schedule — first thing in the morning, after meals, and right before bedtime — and she’s catching on beautifully. She’s also learning to use potty bells and has already rung them a few times (though occasionally just for a little outdoor adventure rather than a potty break!). If she doesn’t ring the bell, she’ll sit politely by the back door to signal that she needs to go out. With continued consistency in her adoptive home, she’ll have this mastered in no time!

While Mildred isn’t a big fan of her crate, she’s completely accident-free when crated and understands it’s not a potty spot. She’ll go in with a little encouragement (and a treat, of course!) and usually settles down quickly for a nap. Because she has a wobbly gait and stairs in her foster home, she’s crated for safety when left alone so she doesn’t attempt to navigate stairs unsupervised. When her family is home, though, Mildred prefers to be right by their side — or better yet, snuggled up in bed with them! She’s an affectionate, loyal little shadow who wants nothing more than to be close to her people.

For her continued success, Mildred’s adoptive family should be patient, consistent, and willing to maintain her current potty schedule. She’s such a smart and eager-to-please girl that with routine and gentle guidance, she’ll continue to shine.

Medically, Mildred seems to be in good health. She has been spayed, had a dental, updated on vaccinations/dewormings, heartworm tested, microchipped, and has been given the okay to adopt by our veterinarian. As mentioned, her gait is a bit wobbly.  She has been attending therapy where she receives cold laser therapy and an exercise routine that will help continue to keep her gait from weakening. Mildred is NOT to ever jump on/off any furniture in fear she could injure her back.  She is on a daily joint supplement and that is recommended to keep up.  If adopted in the Chicagoland area, a free therapy session will be included!  Mildred suffered from ear issues in her past; her ears must be cleaned as needed to avoid any further infection.

Mildred is an adaptable, happy-go-lucky girl who would thrive in a variety of home settings, as long as her new family can safely accommodate her mobility needs. Because of her wobbly gait, a home without stairs — or one where she can be assisted when needed — would be ideal. She’s learned to use small pet stairs to get on and off furniture safely, and while she can go up a few steps confidently, going down can be a little tricky if she gets excited. For full flights of stairs, she should be carried or guided to keep her safe.

A fenced-in yard would be a wonderful bonus for Mildred! Since her walks are currently limited to about 30 minutes, having a secure outdoor space would give her the freedom to stretch her legs, sniff around, and enjoy some fresh air at her own pace. That said, it’s not a requirement — she’d do just as well in a first-floor apartment or one with elevator access, especially if there’s a nearby dog run or balcony grass pad for quick potty breaks. The main priority is that she has safe, supervised outdoor time and a comfortable environment that supports her mobility needs.

Mildred would be happiest in a home where someone is around most of the day — a work-from-home professional, retiree, or family with a flexible schedule would be perfect. She’s very much a Velcro pup and loves to be part of everything her people are doing. Whether you’re working at your desk, relaxing on the couch, or making dinner, she’ll be close by — napping at your feet or watching you with her big, expressive eyes.

She’d also make a wonderful office companion! Mildred loves meeting new people and has a calm, social demeanor once she settles in. As long as she has a cozy bed nearby and a few short breaks for potty time and snuggles, she’ll be a content and well-mannered little coworker.

Mildred is truly one of a kind — sweet, social, and full of personality. She’s been through a lot but hasn’t lost her joyful spirit or her love for life. She just wants to be included, loved, and treated like part of the family. Whoever adopts this special girl will be gaining the most loyal, loving, and entertaining companion — one who will bring endless smiles, laughter, and warmth to their days.

If you feel like your family might be the perfect forever home for Mildred, please submit an adoption application for her today!!

disclaimer

Please note that it will likely be at *least* a 3–4 week minimum before you hear back from us after submitting an adoption application.

We typically accept for new applications for a period of 7 days or until 20 applications have been received for any newly available dog. After that time period, the applications are sent on to the foster family for review and that usually takes from at *least* a few days to a week to sort through the applications, etc. Most of our dogs receive several applications so this process does take some time, especially on dogs who are more popular for one reason or another.

We do require phone interviews to be conducted between the foster family and potential adopters, vet reference checks and a home visit to be conducted for all potential adopters, if they are selected as the top choice applicant, which will also take time to complete. That being said, we do always let our applicants know if they are chosen or not.

IF you happen to not be chosen, please don’t feel discouraged as, again, we usually get several applications for each dog, and sometimes it can be very difficult to choose just one adopter. In those cases, we usually offer to keep the applications for adoption on file for any future dogs that come into our rescue.

ALL adopters are required to come and pick up their adopted dogs in person from the dog’s foster home (we do not ship any of our dogs). Please have road/driving transport plans in place to pick up an adopted dog before you apply! While we are not against adopters flying a foster dog in cabin on a commercial flight, please keep in mind that many are not good candidates for flying due to size and/or being a brachycephalic/short nosed breed.

If an adopter cannot keep one of our grads, for any reason at all, at ANY point in time, they *must* be willing and able to return their adopted dog to his/her original foster home, despite distance and any costs that would be required to do so.
