Gertrude’s Story
Gertrude came into the SNAFU Rescue via a breeder release. Her breeder wanted her to be placed in a loving home and spend the rest of her years being a spoiled pet.
Meet Gertrude — a very tender, timid little French Bulldog who is still learning what it means to feel safe, comfortable, and truly at home.
Gertrude is a quiet observer of the world. She moves slowly, thoughtfully, and prefers calm, predictable spaces where nothing feels rushed. If you gently place her on the couch, she’s perfectly content to stay there for hours, soaking in the stillness. When she’s on the floor, she’ll seek out safe hideaways — behind the couch, under a table — cozy little spots where she can relax and watch from a distance.
She’s still discovering how to be a pet. Toys aren’t quite her thing yet, though she’s begun to show small sparks of curiosity. Outside, Gertrude prefers wandering the yard at her own pace, sniffing the breeze, then settling in for a good nap. Her energy level is low and easygoing, and she would do best with another calm, couch-loving dog or in a peaceful home where expectations are gentle and minimal.
Sudden noises and fast movements can startle her, so a home with older children or no children at all will help her feel most secure. She hasn’t been exposed to kids yet, and a quiet household will allow her confidence to grow without pressure.
Gertrude eats in her own space and is not food-motivated, but she’s making slow, steady progress — becoming more comfortable as trust builds. Having another gentle dog in the home could help her adjust and learn by example, offering reassurance and modeling confident, relaxed behavior.
Gertrude is looking for a family who understands that love doesn’t always arrive loudly. She needs patience, guidance, and the freedom to move at her own pace. In return, she offers something incredibly special: quiet companionship, soft presence, and the privilege of watching a shy soul slowly bloom.
Gertrude is doing very well with her potty routine and has had no accidents in her foster home. She thrives on structure and consistency, and keeping to a predictable schedule has helped her feel secure and successful. Like many sensitive dogs (and especially on cold days!), she sometimes needs a little encouragement to stay outside long enough to finish her business — but with gentle guidance, she does just fine.
Gertrude is crate trained and sleeps quietly in her crate at night without any fuss. Her crate is a calm, familiar space where she can fully relax and rest peacefully.
She eats her meals in her own designated area — a pack & play — which gives her the privacy and low-pressure environment she needs. Gertrude isn’t food motivated, but she’s slowly becoming more comfortable with mealtime as trust continues to build.
During the day, Gertrude is happiest lounging on the couch or bed, soaking in the calm of the home. She’s a low-energy girl who enjoys rest, stillness, and being nearby without needing constant interaction.
With continued routine, patience, and gentle encouragement, Gertrude will continue to do beautifully. She’s a dog who truly blossoms when her world feels quiet and predictable — and in the right home, she’ll remain the peaceful, easy companion she’s becoming.
Medically, Gertrude seems to be in great health. She has been spayed, had a dental, nares widened, updated on vaccinations/dewormings, heartworm tested, microchipped, and has been given the okay to adopt by our veterinarian.
Gertrude doesn’t need a big, busy world — she needs a quiet, steady one. She would be a lovely match for a single adult, a calm couple, or a family with older, respectful children who understand that patience is everything. Gertrude is still very scared and timid, and she isn’t a “fun, instant-companion” kind of dog — but with time, she is absolutely capable of making beautiful strides in the right home. Due to her overall timid personality, a fenced-in yard is preferred but not required for her ongoing safety. She should always be secured with a harness and leash if not in a fenced-in area.
She is an ultimate lounger and happiest spending her days resting on the couch or bed, quietly keeping her people company. A fenced yard is not required, though it would be a nice bonus for safe potty breaks and gentle wandering. If a yard is not fenced, Gertrude should always be walked using a secure harness and leash. She isn’t a runner, but safety and predictability are key for her confidence.
Gertrude has not had stairs in her foster home, but she would be okay with a few steps given gentle guidance and reassurance. She moves cautiously, thoughtfully, and benefits from calm encouragement rather than pressure.
A work-from-home, part-time-from-home, or stay-at-home adopter would truly be a dream for her. She thrives when she can spend her days near her trusted people, and she would do wonderfully in a quiet office environment, where she can relax nearby and simply be part of the day without expectation.
Gertrude is a very quiet dog, making her well-suited for shared-wall living such as apartments or townhomes. She isn’t demanding or vocal — she’s content just being present.
She may not shine right away, but beneath the layers of uncertainty is a darling little girl — sweet as pie — waiting for the right person to give her the time and safety she needs. If you’re someone who believes in slow transformations and quiet victories, Gertrude’s journey will be incredibly rewarding to witness.

disclaimer
Please note that it will likely be at *least* a 3–4 week minimum before you hear back from us after submitting an adoption application.
We typically accept for new applications for a period of 7 days or until 20 applications have been received for any newly available dog. After that time period, the applications are sent on to the foster family for review and that usually takes from at *least* a few days to a week to sort through the applications, etc. Most of our dogs receive several applications so this process does take some time, especially on dogs who are more popular for one reason or another.
We do require phone interviews to be conducted between the foster family and potential adopters, vet reference checks and a home visit to be conducted for all potential adopters, if they are selected as the top choice applicant, which will also take time to complete. That being said, we do always let our applicants know if they are chosen or not.
IF you happen to not be chosen, please don’t feel discouraged as, again, we usually get several applications for each dog, and sometimes it can be very difficult to choose just one adopter. In those cases, we usually offer to keep the applications for adoption on file for any future dogs that come into our rescue.
ALL adopters are required to come and pick up their adopted dogs in person from the dog’s foster home (we do not ship any of our dogs). Please have road/driving transport plans in place to pick up an adopted dog before you apply! While we are not against adopters flying a foster dog in cabin on a commercial flight, please keep in mind that many are not good candidates for flying due to size and/or being a brachycephalic/short nosed breed.
If an adopter cannot keep one of our grads, for any reason at all, at ANY point in time, they *must* be willing and able to return their adopted dog to his/her original foster home, despite distance and any costs that would be required to do so.
SNAFU Rescue is a 501(c)(3) tax deductible non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes all short-nosed breeds in need.
