Duchess’s Story
Duchess came into the SNAFU Rescue via a breeder release. Her breeder wanted her to be placed in a loving home and spend the rest of her years being a spoiled pet.
👑 Meet Duchess – the pint-sized royal with a heart of gold, a mountain of toys, and a growing sense of adventure! 👑
Duchess is a dainty, laid-back little Frenchie girl with the soul of a queen and the silliness of a court jester. She’s equal parts bashful and bold, reserved and ridiculous—and every bit as charming as her name suggests. When Duchess first arrived in rescue, she was a nervous girl who wasn’t quite sure what to make of this big, busy world. But day by day, with the help of her loving foster family, she’s been bravely tip-toeing out of her shell… and stealing hearts along the way.
While Duchess prefers a quiet, calm household and a cozy corner to relax in when the world feels overwhelming, she’s also discovering that toys are kind of amazing. In fact, Duchess is a world-class hoarder. That’s right—this toy-obsessed little gremlin will gather every squeaky, crinkly, fluffy object she can find and squirrel them away into one big glorious pile. Her favorite place to hoard? Her bed or pillow. Sometimes she buries herself so completely in her treasure trove that you can barely spot her under the fluff!
But don’t be fooled—Duchess does not share. At least, not yet. She takes her prized possessions very seriously and is currently working on learning that toys are, in fact, for everyone. With guidance and consistency, she’s making slow but steady progress and has shown that, with time and patience, she can learn to coexist peacefully with her furry siblings—though supervised playtime and limited toy access are a must for now.
Despite her dainty appearance, Duchess isn’t all snoozes and snuggles—she’s got some serious zoomie power! She loves dashing around the backyard, flinging toys in the air, and playfully pulling at her foster sister’s cheeks to spark a round of roughhousing. Fetch? Absolutely. She could chase toys all day long with her adorable little butt wiggling in excitement.
Though she’s growing more confident each day, Duchess still startles easily with unfamiliar noises or sudden movements. She doesn’t run and hide—she may freeze, flinch, or look to her humans for reassurance—but her comfort zone is expanding all the time. She needs a predictable, low-key home environment and gentle, patient humans who understand that big changes can take time. She will also need a family who is willing to spend extra time with her, provide the space she requires, offer her ongoing patience, and introduce her slowly to new things to build her confidence.
Duchess gets along with the resident Frenchies and a Boxer mix in her foster home, and she’s starting to initiate play more often. We think she’d thrive in a home with another calm, well-mannered dog who can show her the ropes and help her continue to blossom. She needs a patient, low-key/calm, and understanding family that can help her build confidence in a new environment. She’s met a few respectful kiddos—including her foster’s 7-year-old nephew—and did great. She enjoys soft pets and gentle snuggles, so we think dog-savvy children over age 7 would be a good fit. Since she’s still adjusting to the world, slow introductions and supervision around kids are essential to make sure everyone feels safe and respected.
Car rides and walks are still a bit nerve-wracking for Duchess, but she’s making progress. She’s a little unsure at first, but once she gets moving—especially on a walk with another dog—she finds her groove and starts to enjoy the journey. She’s learning that the world doesn’t have to be scary… especially if toys or snacks are involved.
More than anything, Duchess is searching for a forever family who can offer her patience, stability, and unconditional love. A family who will celebrate her wins, laugh at her quirks, and help her continue to grow into the confident, happy pup she’s becoming. In return, she’ll offer you her whole heart, a few stolen socks, and every toy she can find (well—almost).
If you’re ready to welcome a sweet, silly, slightly stubborn little queen into your life, Duchess might just be the perfect match. LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!
Duchess is making great strides with her potty training and is well on her way to being fully housebroken! Her foster family reports that she’s starting to let them know when she needs to go outside—often trotting over to the door with those big, expressive eyes. She’s still a work in progress, so occasional accidents can happen, especially if she’s left too long, but with consistency and routine, she’s quickly figuring it out. Her adoptive family will need to keep her on a regular schedule to support her continued success—she thrives on predictability and gentle guidance.
Early on, Duchess found comfort in her crate, but these days she prefers a bit more freedom. While she doesn’t love being closed in, she does well when left in a secure space like the entryway with hallway access. Her foster family sections her off during mealtimes and when they’re away, and she settles in just fine.
Duchess is still learning the dos and don’ts of indoor life, and because she doesn’t quite know what’s dangerous (yet), it’s important to create a safe, cozy environment where she can feel secure but still have some independence. Whether it’s a soft bed tucked in a quiet corner or a comfy gated space where she can observe the household goings-on, Duchess will appreciate having her own little sanctuary while she continues adjusting to life as a cherished pet.
Medically, Duchess seems to be in good health. She has been spayed, had a dental with extractions, nares widened, updated on vaccinations/dewormings, heartworm tested, and has been given the okay to adopt by our veterinarian. Duchess does suffer from seasonal allergies and will benefit from a daily OTC allergy med, cytopoint injections during high allergy season, wipe down and bathing.
Duchess is dreaming of a quiet home with a securely fenced-in yard where she can safely stretch her little legs, chase a squeaky toy or two, and zip around during her beloved zoomie sessions. She’s not quite leash-ready just yet—new environments and unpredictable sounds can be overwhelming for her—so a yard is a must for her safety as she continues to build confidence. Duchess hasn’t fully conquered stairs (they’re still a bit intimidating!), so a home without long or steep staircases would be ideal, or at least one with patient humans willing to help her learn step by step.
This sweet little butterball is still learning how to “dog”—but she’s come so far already! She’s curious about the world, and even if she’s still timid, she’s showing more bravery each day. Her perfect people will be patient, calm, and have the time and energy to gently guide her as she adjusts to pet life. Duchess would thrive in a home where someone is around during the day—she would absolutely love a work-from-home setup! She may be too timid for an office setting right now, but with time, routine, and confidence-building, she might become the perfect quiet cubicle buddy (as long as she has a comfy retreat nearby to recharge).
No office? No problem! Duchess is content snoozing the day away in a gated area as long as her people don’t leave for long hours. While she has no interest in the couch life, she’ll happily put her front paws up to ask for pets and belly rubs—her absolute favorite thing in the world. She also enjoys playing, investigating her surroundings, and, of course, mealtime… which she prefers served on a plate with wet food mixed in and a bit of water like the pampered queen she is.
Above all, Duchess needs a family that can offer her gentle companionship, lots of belly rubs, a consistent routine, and the space to bloom at her own pace. She’s incredibly sweet, endlessly endearing, and just waiting for her forever people to help her step into the confident, joyful life she deserves.
If you feel like your family might be the perfect forever home for Duchess, please submit an adoption application for her today!!
disclaimer
Please note that it will likely be at *least* a 3–4 week minimum before you hear back from us after submitting an adoption application.
We typically accept for new applications for a period of 7 days or until 20 applications have been received for any newly available dog. After that time period, the applications are sent on to the foster family for review and that usually takes from at *least* a few days to a week to sort through the applications, etc. Most of our dogs receive several applications so this process does take some time, especially on dogs who are more popular for one reason or another.
We do require phone interviews to be conducted between the foster family and potential adopters, vet reference checks and a home visit to be conducted for all potential adopters, if they are selected as the top choice applicant, which will also take time to complete. That being said, we do always let our applicants know if they are chosen or not.
IF you happen to not be chosen, please don’t feel discouraged as, again, we usually get several applications for each dog, and sometimes it can be very difficult to choose just one adopter. In those cases, we usually offer to keep the applications for adoption on file for any future dogs that come into our rescue.
ALL adopters are required to come and pick up their adopted dogs in person from the dog’s foster home (we do not ship any of our dogs). Please have road/driving transport plans in place to pick up an adopted dog before you apply! While we are not against adopters flying a foster dog in cabin on a commercial flight, please keep in mind that many are not good candidates for flying due to size and/or being a brachycephalic/short nosed breed.
If an adopter cannot keep one of our grads, for any reason at all, at ANY point in time, they *must* be willing and able to return their adopted dog to his/her original foster home, despite distance and any costs that would be required to do so.
SNAFU Rescue is a 501(c)(3) tax deductible non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes all short-nosed breeds in need.
